Thanks for that, seriously. This board is full of bullshite and jamband people arguing ridiculously esoteric crap... but that's meaningful, and I appreciate it. It definitely helps me make my decision.

My only other main advice is to listen to him about his instructor. Let him change if he doesn't like him or get along with him. I hated my piano teacher but I loved piano when I was under 10 years old. I even competed in a few competitions but my parents wouldn't let me change teachers song just quit all together. I regret it every day. Honestly. I just bought a keyboard to start playing again but I'd be so much better if I had switched teachers and stuck with it.

I got it a few months ago - tons of fun but I don't think it is a good teaching tool as such. It doesn't teach you to play guitar, it teaches you to hit notes along with colored dots on a screen. That translates well to certain songs, especially those with single-note riffs (like the Arctic Monkeys song they have), but not so well to others.
However, this:
is worth the price of admission by itself. I'm amazed by how well it handles amp/effects modeling. That actually is what inspired me to start that thread about multi-effects units.

For those who were asking about acoustic guitars, I use to play this game with my acoustic. It had a plug in and it worked great.

Sweet. I was actually given it for Christmas yesterday, so I'm going to find out soon.

Got it today. Will check it out soon.

I got it last Christmas for Xbox and I really enjoy it, just paid for the Jimi Hendrix DLC pack that came out recently. That guy's songs can be tough!!
My only complaint would be that I feel like sometimes it rewards you even if you're pretty sloppy in trying to hit all the notes rather than trying to master a song precisely.

Haven't really played it enough to give a thorough review, but I'm liking it so far. It's taking some getting used to. I think once I really get used to the whole colored string thing, I'll be okay, but it's hard to follow along at first.

That's what gave me the most trouble.
