The Interview will make it to theaters and it'll make significantly more money because of the recent publicity than it would've made otherwise, so I think he'll be fine.

had a 1 screen theatrical release and can now be seen on DVD, Amazon, iTunes, and other VOD services.

It was an artsy tiny independent movie and those tend to have very small releases anyway. Its pretty common for those to not have wide screen releases.

I would say over a hundred movies come out every year that only play in one or two theaters in LA/NY. Those being the foreign arthouse films and indie films (not faux-indie films like, say, Juno) that simply do not have a large enough market outside of those two major cultural hubs.

As I Lay Dying was one of them.

One night release in Madison Ms.

Wow, a one night flop. You can make money off a one night flop

This has nothing to do with the movie being a bust. It is all about King Jong Un being an overly sensitive twat and Sony execs having too many skeletons in their closets.

that movie was in no way meant to be a wide screen release money maker

again, it was tiny self funded independent movie that he did b/c of the challenge of adapting that specific book.

Pretty much. Neither was As I Lay Dying. The OP is a little confused.

Per Wiki:

quote:

The novel As I Lay Dying was described as a story impossible to be transformed into a film due to the multi-narrative voices within it.[4] Franco saw this as a challenge and was able to depict the many voices, through choices of styling through camera edits.

Sounds like it simply a self-funded experiment. Nothing more and nothing less.

Many actors have had movies not make it to theaters. Some movies just don't come out the way they were planned and studios decide not to wide release it. Sometimes movies will only appeal to a small audience and are meant for a small release. These things happen all the time. A real bust is when a movie gets a wide release and fails to bring in the money. Franco is in no way a box office bust considering Spider-man, Oz, and This is the End.

Clearly The Interview is a different situation than any other. Franco should be so lucky to be in this film.
