The Rev. Al Green should be in this conversation.

Any opera singer

Pretty much what I was thinking. I think it's funny that "most talented ever" in discussions like this means "in pop music." The technical demands of something like opera doesn't even compare to pop music. People who are thought to be the best of the best voices in the pop world generally can't even hack it in opera. Pop is about the brand. Opera is about the voice.

Someone like Whitney Houston is equivalent to the flashy hair metal guitarists of the 80's that would play scales really fast and finger tap.

What has Whitney ever done that trumps Mariah's vision of love?

I'll answer that. Nothing

She recorded that when she was 18yrs old

I've never really listened to Whitney Houston and I know most of the thread consists of pop and classic rock vocalists, but a few of my favs are:

Serj Tankian
Ronnie James Dio
Freddie Mercury
Janis Joplin
Grace Slick (Airplane era)

Like I said, I don't know shite about Whitney, but Serj, Dio, and Mercury all have ridiculous range.

ETA: I'm sure Whitney Houston has much more range than her tho.

I think Jeff Buckley is among the best. Could anyone sing lilac wine the way he did?

If we are talking about the last year of Whitney, you could say Rosanne Barr.
For reals though, someone posted a pic of Mary Poppins. Julie was good, yo.

Mariah Carrey
Christina Aguilera

Attended a charity event here in Houston several years back and Adam Archuleta sang a few chrmistmas songs, that kid has got to have the most pitch-perfect voice I've ever heard in my life however his stage presence is not all that good to say the least.

This is obviously an opinion thread. For me the best pure vocalist:

Female:

1. Whitney Houston
2. Alison Krauss

Male:

1. Marvin Gaye
2. Sam Cooke
