Anybody ever plant persimmon or any other type of fruit trees for deer? Thinking about planting a few for next season.

Make sure you put something around the stem to prevent the deer from rubbing/breaking them.

Japanese persimmon make bigger, sweeter fruit that last longer into the season. They are a good choice if you want something in November or December. If you want something earlier, Pears are good.

If you plant persimmon, you'll need plants of both genders.

I was looking at the Fuyu persimmons and from what i've read it look like they are self pollinating.

The dude I bought my place from planted 800 and something trees in the yard. Some got bushhogged by me when I first moved there, but I still have 500+. Of those 500 8 are persimmon tree. Of those 8 I have only seen fruit on 4-5 in a given year. What up wit dat?

Cut down all the ones that don't make fruit. That will show them!

Not at all. Well, unless it switches which I think can happen, but not certain. Transgender with no surgery needed.

That's why you pay extra and go japanese, they pollinate themselves and produce better fruit

And yes be sure to protect them from the deer while the trees r young

Let me know when you find a good supplier of these trees in the nola area

FWIW you can graft Japanese to established American trees and get all of them producing with early and late ripening fruit.

Can do the same with pears to already established Bradford pears which grow everywhere around here.

I plan to do this this spring.

A guy I used to work with brought three 5-gallon buckets of Japanese persimmons to work one day to give away. I took one bucket and put in my office. Crazy cat lady came by and asked what I was doing with them. I told her I was going to put them in a pile and kill the deer that came to eat them. She put a note on the other 2 buckets, which were in the common area, saying something like "please take these home or Tenfoe will use them to kill deer."
