Because Obama is doing it, it has to be a bad idea obviously.

Once upon a time, at the height of the Cold War, Cuba posed an actual threat to American security. The restrictions should have been lifted twenty years ago but were kept in place to feed the delusions of the Cuban exile community in Miami. Long overdue.

There should never have been an embargo. Long overdue.

The downvotes I am receiving are hilarious. I fricking hate Obama.

Some of you dumbasses that blindly follow your party are the problem with this country.

Apparently.

In their minds Obama caught the Jeb Bush exploratory committee announcement on CNN, then immediately called the pope and Castro up to broker a prisoner swap / release in order to... um... reduce the news coverage Jeb was getting?

Cubans are the most conservative political group in the country. Seeking their vote would be like Jeb campaigning in Berkeley, California.

The first generation Cuban emigres still dreamed of retaking Cuba. They thought JFK betrayed them and were thus a reliable GOP voting bloc. Their children and grandchildren have moved on and there's nothing to gain politically by continuing the embargo. There was actually a little speculation that GWB might do this, but I guess there's was still a lot of entrenched Republican inertia against it.

I guess because I can't relate AT ALL with the Republican stance on this issue. It's insane and makes the whole party look stupid.

Keep it up and we will get ANOTHER shite president in 2016.

That's what they want. They deserve it. They're knighting for people like Rubio, Jindal, and Cruz. They've gone batshit.

No.

I am suggesting, based on Hillary's prepared and nearly immediate statements regarding the Cuban EO, this was a preplanned dooh-dooh mine the Dems had waiting. Very likely planned and coordinated between Clinton and Obama.

After 2008, the Clintons are paranoid as hell about this race. Rightly or wrongly, they are scared to death of a JEB candidacy, and his fundraising capability. As the sole GOP player at this point, they did not want him gaining momentum. IMO, that is why the EO came so suddenly. It is actually a damn shrewd move.

Think about it.
Obama does not usually work this way.
He loves to trash talk in advance, tell you what a great intellectual force he is. It serves as a subtle vetting of his plan. Allows him to get a sense of opposition and where arguments might originate. Then he puts some iteration of a plan in place.
Hell he even telegraphs punches with ISIS.
Not in this case.
This decision came very quickly.

Why?

Who do you suggest they run? I'm not supportive of any of those, but to be honest, I don't see anyone that just strikes me as a good candidate for the GOP.

"Republican PR plan in response to Obama actions"

Step 1 "disagree with Obama"
Step 2 "see step 1"

I remember rumblings of possible normalization before this, and I would assume the behind-the-scenes stuff would take a little while to work out. I see what you're saying about Hillary and JEb, and it could have been just sitting there waiting to be uncorked, but I think this was something Obama was going to do eventually regardless of whether Jeb declared or not.

Enh, its party politics to frick with Bush the Trilogy.

That being said it is time to stick a fork in Cuba and call them done. Castro and company know they are shuffling out the door sooner rather then later and something that normalizes relations, sets up the stage for the inevitable march to democracy and capitalism, and comes with the blessing of Pope is manna from heaven for them.

Normalize relations, usher out the dead as a fricking doornail Communists, and Cuba could thrive once they get their feet under them. It might have been done to mess with Bush the Trilogy but Obama seems to be the blind pig that found an acorn here.
