I plan on seeing the movie but I can't see how she or any director could do justice to this book and story.

I can see this movie going overboard with the pro Murica propaganda
Yea, those "good guys" we fought in WWII have their side too.

I heard they cut out the part about Christianity. Haven't seen it so I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised either.
I figured they would, but I thought they'd probably throw in some overtures to it.
I was pretty pissed about this at first, then I researched it and that is supposedly how he wanted it. He said he wanted it to be accessible to all types of people and not just Christians. He said he hoped that the ending would send them digging deeper and discover Christ themselves. I am not sure I totally agree with that approach but at least it is not contrary to what he wanted.

but the book becomes more dubious all the time, unfortunately.
Why? Because of Jesse Ventura?
Enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the movie.

There have been a lot of questions regarding some of Kyle's more spectacular claims, even in conservative and military circles. It's unfortunate and unless they totally unravel the bulk of his book I don't really care.
I have the book but haven't read it yet. I'll definitely see the movie.

Unbrokn and Band of Brothers are two of the best books around.

Much more excited about American Sniper.
I liked Sniper more, but Sniper wasn't all that great either. Freakin' Bane was more intelligible than Bradley Cooper in this movie.

The movie may very well suck, but if there is a subject matter I don't really trust film critics' objectivity on, it's an American military hero story where the protagonist becomes a born again Christian.
What are you trying to say?

Saw it today. The beginning was horrible, but it got better as it went on. I would give it a 6 out of 10

People are freaking out about this, but I wasn't a huge fan of that part anyway. If they have to cut stuff, that is near the top of the list for me
Maybe you were not a huge fan.
But apparently the guy that the story was about was a pretty big fan.
But I understand cutting important personal details to appeal to a base mass audience.

I was thinking whenever I read the book that I wish Clint Eastwood would've directed Unbroken.
His films are so vastly overrated.

Saw this today. It was good, nowhere near great. There was something noticeably lacking in terms of aura or whatever intangible quality makes a movie great. This one didn't have it.
For the book readers, as silly as this sounds there weren't enough of the sharks during the raft time period. They were literally a constant looming dange during that stretch and that didn't translate whatsoever in the movie. I guess that's my biggest complaint - not many of the visceral, emotional points of the book translated into Jolie's film. Too bad, because the book and story are incredible.

That film critics are a pathetic lot who think movies about military/war/politics/faith/etc. should generally advance progressive ideology?

Saw this movie last night and this is what I came away with: had I not read the book I would have been satisfied that I just watched a pretty good movie. However, having read the book I left knowing I just watched an incomplete story. Not an incomplete movie but an incomplete story.
Blaming Jolie is silly. It would take eight hours to tell Louis Zamperini's story. Two hours could have been spent on the Bird's madness alone.
I was not unsatisfied with this movie or Jolie's effort.

Same. And folks with me who didn't read the book said they felt it was obvious things were left out.
It was disjointed and incomplete. Would be a mediocre effort absent the book, as a service to the book it was very poor.

My wife and daughter were both squirming at the brutality inflicted upon Louis but I suspect IRL it was far worse than what was depicted on the screen.
All I will pass on is that I'm glad I saw this movie and it didn't diminish my admiration for the book in the least.
