I think the rule is that if you play at all during the season, you lose your redshirt unless there's a medical issue, etc.

Who was the freshman CB that hadn't played all season but in the SEC Championship game he was put in after an injury to the starter and lost his redshirt? Saban was the coach. I remember a quote from him that was something to the effect of "I play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back of the jersey."

Awesome guy that I believe was eventually drafted by Saban and the Dolphins.

Edit: Travis Daniels - played a few years in the league.

I thought that was Randall "Blue" Gay whose redshirt was burned in the bowl

I've searched and couldn't find the answer. How can Bo Scarbrough practice with Bama before he enrolls in January?

quote:

"Once a guy finishes all the things that he has to do by NCAA rules and is admitted to school, he's eligible to practice," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "He can't play. So while we're practicing here, he can participate in practices."

Saban on Scarbrough

I feel like we've done something similar recently with a Juco guy. Maybe Mett?

eta: it was Mett

quote:

"A mid-semester transfer cannot practice with the team until he is cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse," LSU senior associate athletic director for NCAA compliance Bo Bahnsen said, speaking not specifically about Mettenberger. "A transfer can practice with the team before a bowl on campus, but not at the bowl site and (he) cannot play in the bowl game."

Why would you want to waste a red shirt now?
