If you decide to spend the extra $$ I'd consider upgrading to a "bobbed" frame and an alloy/lightweight frame, especially if the gun might be used for cc. A lot of people (myself included) find the Commander seems to fit them better than do other sizes of 1911's. To me, the Commander doesn't seem to have much more recoil than the Government model.

If I were looking for a 1911 in that range it would be...

Colt Two-Tone Rail Gun - $1150

or

Springfield Operator - $1229

I will likely own higher end 1911s in the future, so I guess that should factor in too.

Springfield is the way to go. You can get either of these for less than a $1,000.

Springfield Range Officer Compact

Springfield Loaded

The loaded isn't a compact, or commander size, still an awesome gun.

could be wrong but i think bapple may have some know about it

Look in my signature photo. That green/black 1911 is my buddy's Springfield Operator. It is a VERY fine 1911 - fitted well and parts are high quality. I wouldn't doubt its abilities for a second.

I'm leaning Commander size, and my starting point was the SR1911 CMD.

I don't know if you ever saw my review on it, but if you haven't here it is:

Ruger SR1911CMD

Pros:
Very smooth action
Crispy trigger
Great sight picture
Positive safety actuation
Integrated plunger tube
Standard barrel bushing and plug

Cons:
Front of grip has no serrations
Writing on bottom of dust cover

Highest value American 1911 on the market!
