My desktop computer was plugged into a surge protector but we had a power surge at the house and it got the computer.

Now it won't turn on. Would replacing the power supply fix this or is their a bigger problem?

Buy a power supply tester. They are cheap.

If the power supply tests as bad, replacing it would be the minimum and hopefully the only thing. Sometimes the lesser quality power supplies can bring other components to the grave with it.

Most of the better ones come with a protection damage guaranty. Might want to check into that.

Most power surge devices will take only one surge and then they no longer protect

Unless you have the expensive type

Power supply likely gone but I would now be concerned about motherboard and other components.

I trust you are doing a backup?

Most do not come with that unless you pay extra for it.

And yes, if you're lucky all you need to do is replace the PS. If not, you'll need to replace who knows what.

? I bought a $24.00 Belkin the other day--it comes with the purchase. There's no extra charge.

Yeah, most of the decent surge protectors have an equipment replacement warranty/coverage. However, do you personally know anyone who's ever successfully filed a claim and received a payout for it? Those warranties are generally pretty useless. The burden of proof is on the customer whether the failure was the surge protector's fault and the surge itself was within the protection threshold. The company serves as judge and jury in this case. You'd probably need to be an EE to present a strong enough case to them, and they'll probably still deny it.

Why do they put a guarantee on the box?

Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shite. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time.

Yeah. Good luck collecting on that if anything happens.

Insurance will..I have filed two claims in the last 10 or so years, and insurance had me send in the strip so they could "recover their claim"..

Also..

Just because you plug into a power strip, does not mean it is a surge protector
