I know what breed is for sure not the smartest, the pug. Good pets but dumb as a sack of hammers.

Smartest I've been around is Sheltie, particularly on a consistent basis. Jack Russells and Border Collies are supposed to be at the top of the list as well.

I've been around more than a few poodles and maybe they are actually smart (like cats), but their useful intelligence is just "meh".

Smartest dog I've had is a German Shepard. Dumbest by far was a Cocker Spaniel.

I have a Boston and he is very smart and ornery.

I have worked with heelers and border collies and both are extremely smart. I f a dog can learn and do things that makes their job easier, very smart. I have seen both outsmart animals and people.

My wife had an old cocker spaniel when we first got married. Good dog but you're right, dumb as can be.

When you read things that say "smartest" what is really meant is most trainable. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are more intelligent. A dog could be really intelligent and also really willful. In terms of that I think that border collies are up there. My cousin does obedience competitions with her dogs, and I think I remember her telling me that border collies dominate certain types of competitions. I don't remember all the dogs my cousin uses, but one of them is a dachshund.

Border collies are extremely intelligent beyond just trainability. That's a whole other category and just a portion of what most studies use to determine intelligence.

The sheltie I have now is usually ranked in the top 10 in these studies. She is extremely intelligent. She knows when to work and when she can use her powers of cute for evil. I have her trained to be a therapy dog because she showed a very strong interest in small children and tolerance to take their screams/abuse. So we go visit sick kids.

Don't know anyone IRL who has a Belgian Malinois, but Navy Seals and the Secret Service use them.

Weenie dogs are actually very intelligent, they are just the biggest trolls of the dog breeds. My weenie dog knows how to play us all the time. She knows exactly what she's doing.

You are probably equating toy poodles (whose brains are by necessity pretty tiny) with all poodles. Standard poodles are incredibly smart though.

Poodles are very smart, but can be very high strung. All the labradoodle, goldendoodle, cockadoodle stuff ... all trying to get the smartness of the poodle with the personalities of more laid back dogs.

I keep telling myself we'll never have another dog after our current 12.5 year old golden dies. But IF we do, I'll get a rescue (and search high and low for a rescue that is a goldendoodle).

This made me for real laugh. My girlfriend recently got a weenie dog puppy. I'll walk the thing around the neighborhood for 15 minutes or so and it won't shite, get back in the house and within 30 seconds it's taking a shite and just looking at you while he's doing it.
