My Australian Shepard is Mensa status. Most herding breeds/Shepards are very bright.

When you read things that say "smartest" what is really meant is most trainable. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are more intelligent. A dog could be really intelligent and also really willful.

In terms of that I think that border collies are up there. My cousin does obedience competitions with her dogs, and I think I remember her telling me that border collies dominate certain types of competitions. I don't remember all the dogs my cousin uses, but one of them is a dachshund.

My great dane certainly is NOT. dude will straight up walk head first into a wall regularly.

However, he's definitely the most human-like I've ever seen.

My sister's border collie grabs armadillos by the tail, slings them around in a circle, then tosses them where he can get to their underbelly.

This we tried words that rhymed for a while but apparently dogs can't differentiate the 2 so now we spell. God forbid you say anything that sounds like food or ride. My dane just reached table height so his tail acts like a battering ram. shite will get broken if you say those words.

My Aussie Shepherd isn't as smart as the border collie, but makes up for it with fearlessness. She also wants to whack everything in her "herding area" so I have to watch her. She wiped out all the barn cats at the farm last year, though she is indifferent to the two house cats here.
