I can't stand Dallas so I didn't watch or follow him. I don't know much about Avery and his time there. But I know the board hates him.

I hear people in real life mention him and say he would be a good hire, but I don't really comment because I'm unfamiliar with it.

So he is going to be the coach that turns us into the Spurs?

My #1 reason against Avery is his supporters. The people that like him the most feel that him being local is his top qualification. Local is a bonus, not a primary qualification, and if your most ardent supporters can't lead with a basketball reason for you, well that's not a good sign.

#2 I don't want another motivator as a coach. Motivating players is important, but we're seeing what happens when you're good at motivation but not good at tactics. I want a tactician. You've assembled a bunch of high character guys and have AD to lead them. Buying in shouldn't be a problem. We need a coach that can use the players he has properly.

We already have his coaching style on the team in Monty. Good motivator not so much on the Xs and Os.

yep, what they just said. Nothing against the guy, just don't think he can take a team to the next level.

Totally agree. His players hated him and his message ran thin, very very quickly. He's a Mark Jackson/Monty Williams.

We don't need that. We need X's and O's. We need a thoughtful coach that brings in thoughtful coaches, that is willing to listen to them.

I'm not trying to veil some hidden support for him. But is it proven that he was so terrible with tactics?

Why did Dallas let him go?

I am here in Dallas. He pretty much went from being in the NBA Finals to fired in a 2 year span. The players just got tired of him. Cuban had given him a big extention after the 06 Finals & just said screw it & fired him because he knew his time was done & the players had it with him. Cuban knows what he is doing. To Avery, every play in the game is Game 7 of the Finals.

Dwayne Casey, Rick Carlisle's assistant has done pretty well up in Toronto making more than expected of the players he had. I don't know much about him honestly, but I'm assuming he's more tactician than motivator being a Carlisle assistant. Like I said give me a tactician, not a motivator.

He took a 67 win team (#1 overall seed) and lost to the 8th seeded Warriors. That had never happened before (in a 7 game series) and has not happened since. Avery made some moves that clearly hurt his team (started Erick Dampier and Diop[!!!] against small ball Warriors) The next year, they still won 50+ games and got bounced in the first round again. These were clearly talented teams that just tuned him out by the end.

He is absolutely what others have said. He is Mark Jackson. A fiery former PG who is big on style and low on substance. His motivational ploys gets guys to play hard (admittedly half of the battle in NBA), but it wears thin pretty soon, and his stubbornness will lose you games. Personally I think we have a better version of that in Monty already (Monty has not coached a team as talented as Avery's Mavs teams), but has shown at least some willingness to adapt to what he has. If we have to make a change, I just don't see the point in hiring Avery Johnson or Mark Jackson.

Yes it has

Grizz over Spurs in 2011(or 12?)
76ers over bulls in 2012(I know Drose got hurt but it still counts)
