Remedial Choas Theory is the best episode - possibly one of the best tv episodes ever made. It is freaking genius.

Plus the OP doesn't mention Annie

but then all the characters just became exaggerated versions of their worst character trait.

This was my biggest complaint when the show was still airing (S1-S4). It was funny when Pierce caused the jokes, and then he became the joke. Britta's change was the weirdest most likely, though I did enjoy everyone making fun of her and always Britta-ing everything. Troy got weird. Etc.

I always said the show swung for the fences almost every week, and most of the time it made contact. There were some down episodes, but a lot of them are truly fantastic IMO. It was really solid television for four years. And I'm in the camp that says season four is vastly underrated. I know it's the cool thing to do, to hate on S4 because Harmon wans't there, and they even later refer to it as the "gas leak" year or whatever...but there are some great episodes in that S4 run.

I also thought S5 was solid too (even if it wasn't as good...but I wasn't expecting it to be).

I record it every day so I've watched the series a few times now, and it's one of my favorite comedies really.

Once they started laying in thick with the gimmick episodes was when the series started to get cringe-worthy bad.

They started to overdo it, sure, but the gimmicky ones are some of the best of the series.

Zombie episode S1
Paintball episode S1
D&D episodes
Paintball episode S2 (or was it 3?)
Law and Order episode
Ken Burns style Pillows and Blankets episode

Etc.

There were some REALLY great gimmick episodes. But I agree with you that they started going to that well a lot at one point...it's like Harmon and company had all these ideas and knew they weren't gonna be able to get to them, so they jsut started cramming them in one after the other.

I think that last part is accurate, constant unknown status caused Harmon to try and fit those type in because he didn't think he'd ever get a chance to do it in the future

Also I've necer really blamed chase for being angry about the direction his character went in. He went from slightly aloof old man who was a tad racist to a vindictive sociopath

S5 was terrible with a small handful of good moments. I know people love Danny's Cage impression, but I felt so bad for him that he was asked to put on that appalling spectacle. It was the nadir (pun intended) of the series for me. I take that back. The end of S05E01 was possible worse, with Abed giggling like a dumb child while watching his video of himself eating Jeff and farting him out. Mike from Breaking Bad was a total drag on the season.

Then again, I didn't know who Harmon was until after S4, so I never had my head up his arse like all his fanboys. I just liked the show, douchiness of its creator notwithstanding.

I like it and all, but I don't think this show is the classic the internet likes to make it out to be.

I think that is kind of a chicken egg thing. It started pretty benign and Chase would cause problems. And as he caused them his character would get worse and it became a cycle.

The whole vision of the show really was Harmon's and a lot of it came from his brain. But he is definitely an a-hole and most of problems were his too.

Season 4 had a lot of fun episodes, but where not having Harmon hurt was in how those stories were tied together. That season was marked by a lot of random plot-holes, dropped story lines, and against-character decision making. It made Season 4 really clash with the other seasons despite the fact that the episodes were still funny and original.

Season 2 belongs in SFP's greatest single season thread.

and you guys are seriously underrating the great Jeff Winger.

The Gas Leak season was terrible and sad.

I'll agree with pretty much all of that.

I wish they could get the original cast back together for the Yahoo season coming up or at least the rumored movie.

I actually liked season 3 more. Especially the part that other people said they didn't like, the idea explosion that brought Law & Order, Video Game, Ocean's 11, etc.

ETA: The cutaway to the nut house in the episode with John Hodgman is one of my favorite moments of the entire series. Along with the racist janitor reveal in the trampoline ep.

The Video Game and GI Jeff are my two favorites. The worst story was Changnesia. He was only funny as a Spanish teacher.

I just recently re-watched the Gangster Movie episode from season 1 where they control the chicken fingers. I think that may have moved up to my favorite episode of the whole series

I can't agree more. However, Chang becoming a dictator was pretty funny.

I was most disappointed with what they did to Troy.
He started out as an injured athlete who always had a curiousity for nerdy weird things, and turned him into a super weird man child obsessed with pop culture and TV

Troy did change a lot but I didn't mind. He became funnier and made a better companion for Abed
