I don't understand this. Seems like the worst day for a movie to hit theaters.

I figured 95% of people are with family. Not watching American Sniper

A lot of families go see movies in the evening on Christmas day. I've only done this once to see Benjamin Button. We only had our immediate family together so it was a fun mix up of our usual traditions

I've never understood why people go to movies on Christmas the same way I don't understand how people can pass up a great meal to go camp out/shop on Thanksgiving.

I know people want to do something fun and spend time with their family on Christmas, but why can't you spend those 2 hours in that dark room with them on the 26th?

A solid 50% of Americans are terrible and hate their families.

We went and saw Django on Christmas a couple of years ago. Every showing at night ended up selling out

I know going to the movies is very popular among the Jewish community on Christmas day. That and eating at Chinese restaurants.

We went to see All the Pretty Horses on Christmas Day. We were down visiting my family, and had sat around most of the day when Dad got the idea to take us all to the movies. It was nice to get out of the house for a couple of hours, and most businesses are closed Christmas day so a movie was the only thing going. Place was packed. A ton of families with young kids (back before I had my two) going to see the latest Christmas kids movies.

I didnt even know the theatres were open on Christmas day.

I guess the loners and people with no families (or ducking their family) need a place to go.

I have never been to a movie theatre between Christmas and New Years in my life.

I used to work at a movie theater. Christmas was one of the bigger days out of the year. There are a lot of people that open gifts, do church and lunch and then hit a movie in the afternoon/evening.

When The Waterboy came out, I took my grandmother and parents to see it on Xmas eve. It created a wonderful Xmas memory that we still talk about to this day.

It was such a silly movie that my grandmother would never typically watch.

by the time christmas night comes around you have played with all the toys/gadgets you got, hung out with your family all day, and probably the day before as well, and in the end its just another day.

We've gone to the movies on Christmas for years. Probably won't this year because we are on a schedule at grandmothers and I forsee Christmas being traumatic but when it's just us, we go. It's a nice finish to the day. Open presents around 10. Eat around 2-4. Cap it off with a trip to the movies. Not much else to do.

A lot of Jewish people like to go to the movies on Christmas. Maybe other religions/non religions, too. And probably a lot of people looking to get out of the house before their family drives them crazy

Most people are "done with Christmas" by 2-3. Need something to do with your day off/family after that.
