This is going way back - early '90s, but I've always been curious about this event. My boss at the time had an incredible piece of property around Poplarville. It was 180 acres with white-fenced pasture for his Beefmaster cattle, rolling hills, wooded areas, had a bass pond large enough to put my SeaDoos in (which we did) which was full of virtually unlimited 5+ lb. bass, and a couple catfish ponds that were very well stocked. The catfish ponds bordered a hillside, so there was a drain pipe down the decline that, when opened, could drain the entire ponds. My boss was killed in an auto accident, so it was at least several weeks before his wife went back up to their property (it was just a weekend place for them). When she got there, the catfish ponds had been drained and all the catfish were stolen. There was a caretaker and his son that also lived on the property, so I always assumed that it was an inside job by him. Maybe he felt like he wasn't paid enough over the years and decided to stick it to the boss man after he was gone and figured the wife wouldn't care. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this, or is this a one-off kind of thing? I don't know what catfish go for wholesale, but I'd think a couple ponds worth drew a decent payoff for an old country boy.

Should just be the general name for any theft from a dead persons estate. It just sounds slimy...

well our property is up there, similar type of situation, we go up on the weekends, have big pond with tons of big bass

people up there just dont seem to give a shite if something is theirs or not. since they grew up there, they seem to think they have a right to go wherever and take whatever they want. We constantly have to chase people off from fishing in our lake and hunting on our property, even with fences and locked gates.

So no, that story doesnt suprise me, if they noticed that noone had been there a few weeks, they probably just decided they had a right to the catfish and took them

It's been a long time since I've been there, and I really don't remember anything other than the city it was in. But man, that place was like heaven to me. If I had the money, that kind of property would be the first thing I bought.

I recall from law school that there is "theft of alligator" and "theft of crawfish". Would not surprise me if this state complicated good old theft more by adding "theft of catfish".

Didn't know you were a lawyer. I assumed you were professional midget mud wrestler.

This. I did not attend law school but it is illegal to steal things that are farmed. I would think (again not a lawyer) it would be the same as stealing a cow assuming he sold the catfish. At least he had the ability to sell the catfish if he wanted to, in my opinion.

If I were a wrestler, it would be with midgets--they're good luck.

If I was a criminal, I think I would find something easier to steal than catfish. That's a whole bunch of work.

I would set up cameras and monitor this kind of activity. If all you do is chase them off, they obviously don't care, and won't care until legal action is taken. Call in Barney Fife and NIP IT!

Yes...guilty of it as well....grew up about 15 miles from catfish ponds. Started out we would sneak in at night with rod n' reel and beer, catch a small ice chest full from time to time.....one day passed a fish market in town that had a sign saying we buy fish. Went in and asked and he said he would buy all we could catch and gave us a number to call and he would come get them.....yep we went bought a back of cheap dog food and a seine....set up at night in a corner of a pond and throw dog food to they were boiling up real good and seine two are three 150 qt ice chest full each trip. Good pay day for High School kids back then.
