There is a TD.com rulebook, and you constantly break the "Don't start a thread for every thought that pops in your head" rule.

What are you even talking about?

Well, let me try to rescue this thread, if you will.

I remember the NAFTA debate. There were a couple of arguments at the time that I recall.

Those consisted of things like:
- Big rig traffic would increase on our highways, and that would include Mexican clunkers that would be unsafe on our roads and drive up highway maintenance costs. There was definitely a surge in truck traffic on interstate highways, but the "clunker" argument never materialized, and, in Louisiana, our Interstate highways are probably in the best shape they've ever been.

- Manufacturing jobs would leave the U.S. for cheaper labor elsewhere, but that would be offset by better paying jobs here through higher corporate bottom lines trickling down. We've certainly lost a huge segment of our manufacturing, and corporations have seemingly enjoyed better margins. But, the trickle down does not seem to have offset the downward pressure on wages, which seems to be backed by wage-inequality statistics over the last 15-20 years.

Other than those layman observances by me, I'm still not sure NAFTA was better for the U.S., nor am I certain that we would be any worse off today without it.

Borders aroung countries are starting to blur as humanity gets connected by technology and social media. In 100 years, I would not be surprised if borders no longer existed on this planet. Borders are a throwback to a primal, clannish period in human history. People travel, intermarry and move across the world away from extended family now and that trend is only accelerating. You are a citizen of the world now.

According to the economic theory of comparative advantage (garble garble garble) globalization benefits us and raises our standard of living in absolute terms. In relative terms, it will help to facilitate the rise of developing powers who may ultimately come back to bite us in the arse. All this whining about China's economy in terms of PPP aside, when their economy is twice as large as ours in real terms by 2050 and they can afford to outspend us on defense, the world order is in for quite a change.

Technology will continue to erase borders, homogenize the world's cultures, create jobs the limited around here fight against in the name of nationalism, and be a boon to the world over.

Globalization will be better for everyone.

And I've seen many, many studies discussing the success NAFTA has been for the U.S.
