TED Image Map of Baltimore: What people are talking about on social media

What do the social networks look like in your city or country? Dave Troy (TED Talk: Social maps that reveal a city’s intersections — and separations) crunches data to see places not as neighborhoods, but as relationships between people. With his PeopleMaps project, he groups people by whom they follow and talk to on Twitter, then works with local collaborators to analyze what those people talk about most. The result? Fascinating non-geographic maps of a region’s interests and communities.
Do you think this is representative of urban America?

The U.S. is a melting pot. There are many cultures and backgrounds here. In most cases, people like to be culturally together. At the same time, crime is higher in the poorer areas, so you are going to have more affluent groups moving away from there.

I don't understand why they didn't lump rap music in with culture. Music isn't culture anymore?

Since Twitter users are a tiny fraction of the total population and not very representative, I'll say no.

edit: the person who put the images together (for more cities than just baltimore) specifically stated that the data showed the racial divide in baltimore more strongly than it did for other cities
but i'm wondering if this is a case of confirmation bias. it does seem suspect that he or she would identify "hip-hop, rap, urban music, clubs" and put them in big letters but then but "culture" and "media" on the white side of town. and what's with the words that are too small to read? there's only two font sizes, so i doubt the font size corresponds to the prevalence of each category. the whole thing is just poorly done, i think

I'd say you could get a pretty decent idea of the type of neighborhoods in the area by looking at those maps.

Guessing the left side of that map contains a lot more crime.

I don't get the divide between pink and blue.

Looks to me they are saying Hip Hop isn't music.

Well, sure, but there are an awful lot of mawmaws and pawpaws in those neighborhoods who don't know the first thing about twitter. That's all I'm saying.

My guess is if waspy mcwhiteyton goes to see an African folk music exhibit at the performing arts center, that's culture.

For sure. It's not a great depiction but does give a general idea IMO

If Toddy lived in Saudia Arabia he'd definitely live in the gay porn / naked men neighborhood.
