Say I have 2 bluetooth speakers that are just random (i.e. not part of a set).

Can I have them both playing the same music from the same ipod at once (i.e. can I make them work in tandem, hooked up to the same device)?

I don't think a single device can stream via Bluetooth to 2 different devices. Also, I've only seen 1 or 2 Bluetooth speakers with daisy chain capabilities.

My inlaws' shoqbox allows pairing with 2 units for stereo playing. I have no idea how well it works because they only have the one.

UE Mini Boom is another that can link 2 together, but to OPs question, no. You can't stream Bluetooth to two separate sources at once. The bluetooth speakers that can relay the signal to the 2nd speaker.
