I think the worst one of my life was Jason White winning over Larry Fitzgerald. White racked up huge numbers but never really seemed like anything special to me at all. You're telling me he was more outstanding than Larry Fitzgerald that year?!?!

And right after Oklahoma lost 7-35 in the B12CG too.

Bama logic

It's actually worse because both the AP and Coaches had been around for awhile by 67.

Actually the most notable thing about that game is how USC leapfrogged #2 Tennessee with the same record even after losing to a terrible Oregon State team. Complete bullshite. UT are the real '67 national champs.

That "terrible" Oregon State team had the same 7-2-1 record that UCLA finished with. Tennessee lost by 4 to UCLA while USC lost by 3 to Oregon State. On top of that, Oregon State and UCLA tied when they played that year. So basically Tennessee was #2 b/c they lost by 1 more point.

The Peyton snub is #1 of all-time

This list is ridiculous.

Always so bitter

Eddie George was not given preferential treatment. Guy almost ran for 2K yards.

Archie, maybe his senior year, but many thought he should have won his sophomore year and didn't because he wasn't an upperclassman

The rest, whatever

Troy Smith sure as hell didn't deserve it.

As to the Archie Griffin one, I agree he should not have won his senior year. However, there have been a lot of people that said he should have won it his sophomore year, but didn't because he was an underclassman (that is a Heisman thing that has only recently ended in itself)
Griffin definitely had a better season as a sophomore than senior. Griffin's 1975 award was a lifetime achievement award rather than an award to the outstanding player. Griffin also benefitted from the fact that Ohio State was unbeaten when the award was presented, but that was not unexpected since Ohio State had been to the Rose Bowl each of the prior 3 seasons.

Chuck Muncie gained more yards rushing than Griffin, had a higher yards per carry and scored more TDs. Muncie also had better numbers as a receiver than Griffin. But what was really overlooked was Muncie's passing stats. He was 3 for 3 passing for 143 yards and 2 TDs. Muncie's contribution was instrumental to Cal going 8-3 as Cal's defense was pretty bad in 1975.

Brown not winning was an unfortunate sign of the times.

The late Dick Schapp always said he resigned his voting privileges after Jim Brown didn't win it. He said, the award was not worth his time anymore.

quote:

"What voters failed to take into account is that Jim Brown single-handedly made Syracuse football relevant again," said Jim Ridlon, a teammate of Brown's in football and lacrosse who went on to play several seasons in the NFL. "Without Jim, we would have been lucky to win two or three games. With him, we became a bowl team back in a time where there were only four or five bowls."

"The Heisman should have gone to Jim Brown. But, in 1956, Jim Brown had the wrong skin color."

Dick Schapp agreed with that assessment. He was an assistant sports editor at Newsweek at the time and cast his first-place vote for Brown. "At that time, no black athlete had ever received the Heisman, and I swore that I would never vote again," he wrote. "I waited a quarter of a century -- till I voted for Marcus Allen in 1981. Times had changed. Allen's Heisman was the eighth in a row for a black running back."

Agreed.

I love this revisionist history just b/c Manning became an All-Time great in the NFL (but so did Woodson too)

Manning wasn't all that awesome at UT - especially voting criteria (blowing it in big games - his hallmark DNA in the NFL too)

People forget how awesome Woodson was that year and how he single-handily won some big games to carry Michigan to the national title. Woodson was sensational...if Tim Brown won it, Woodson certainly deserved it as well.

I'm surprised that Leaf and Moss didn't finish closer to Manning...he was not snubbed...he gobbled up all those Southern votes while Moss and Leaf got bread crumbs. Leaf was the star on the WC...carrying shitty Wazzu to the Rose Bowl - if Manning got snubbed (didn't win shite) - well then Leaf got snubbed per college career. Leaf delivered.

The fact is... Cooper, Gordon, and Mariota is one of the best Heisman classes ever.

Maybe not by names, no. However, their actual stats and capabilities are off the charts.

Everything you say about Gordon is true. To me, Cooper is the best player in college football, and the best wide receiver we've seen in college in at least 10 years.

And then you have Mariota, who had a 38/2 TD/INT ratio.

These kids all could have won it in another year. In the end, it went to the quarterback. Maybe that's a problem? The fact is that it's becoming more and more of a QB award. But at the same time, he had an amazing year. It's hard to argue against him, too.
