Looking to purchase an adjustable basketball goal for my oldest daughter, 9.

Are Lifetime basketball goals durable for her projected, recreational use? No one in my family will be dunking.

I've noticed a considerable price difference between Lifetime goals and say, Spalding.

Board width recommendations?

Lastly, and probably the most important question ... how much bitching will I be doing when I have to put this thing together?

You guys sound fun! The entire point of an adjustable goal is for monster dunks!

Yeah, go ahead and cement one in the ground you have to dig up in a few years. Get one of these;

This one is nice and you can get rid of it / sell it when your kids get older.

I would get a good one to put in the ground from Dick's or Academy. If you are set on portable, the one posted by 91TIGER would be good.

54 or 60 inches, IMO.

I'd rather a permanent installation, however my neighborhood's act of restrictions restrict me from doing so.

The joys of living in a neighborhood.

Unfortunately, I can't set one in the ground. Have to go the portable option route.

Appreciate the recommendation. Is Dick's or Academy better than, say buying it online at Amazon? I'm a PRIME member and I buy 95 % of my items from Amazon.

No, all those Spaulding goals are the same whether from Academy or Amazon. We have the large one I posted and the kids love it, especially when we upgraded from the Lifetime (brand) goal, it was kind of flimsy.

Do you know (approximately) what you paid for the one you posted?

Check out gorilla goals. I think they make a portable one.

Have the clear backboards improved for UV resistance? Most of the older ones I've seen from my day were very brittle.

My dad built me one from 3-4" pipe. It was a fun weekend project laying it out and building it. Cemented in ground, even had a nice 2-3' baseline. Thing is still solid 20 years later.

My dad built one and put it up for my son. I guess the base was defective and the water used to weigh it down drained out. It fell over onto my wife's brand new to us 5 series and her Camry we had already sold to a guy on his way to get it. That sucked.

Got my son a Lifetime goal about 5 years ago when he was 4. Has been played on hundreds of hours with no real issues. Keep an eye out for heavy rust on the nuts and bolts on any goal you get. Replace before they lock up.
