Is it wise for the US Media to "run with" info hacked by North Korea?

Lost in the Sony kerfuffle is the basic question of handing a "victory" to a sworn enemy of our country. On some basic level, doesn't it seem kind of shitty that they hack PRIVATE email and then it gets reported and American lives are then negatively impacted. Seems like the wiser course would be to be VERY CAREFUL about how we allow them to manipulate American Culture.

Am I wrong here?

Yeah, you basically have the American Media sifting over the wreckage of a terrorist attack and exploiting it for entertainment purposes. It is pretty horrendous.

Meanwhile, the Media doesn't do its job on other areas, but they will exploit this.

I am fully behind the American Government going after whoever did this and defending us and our communication and American run/staffed business enterprises (I know that Sony is Japanese, but you know what I mean).

Aren't racists deserving of having their lives negatively affected because of their racism?

I'm not altogether certain American culture has been compromised in any way by these emails nor is it a national security issue.

Now an argument can be made that its not entirely newsworthy and its only our fascination with all things Hollywood that make it so.

This.

ETA: The news used to be about information that lead to knowledge and understanding. The news now exists only to entertain and to create and then satisfy curiosity.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you very much in favor of destroying Donald Sterlings world based on illegally obtained recordings of a private discussion?

Great point and reminder.

You may have the wrong guy in this case, but, your point is completely valid.

Many of the same people that will urge us all to ignore the message because of the messenger will be the same people who were in favor of "destroying Donald Sterling's world".

I'd still like to see something concrete linking it to the North Koreans. I remember Sony floating the North Korean theory within hours of the leak becoming public. I now see the hacker group described as a group "sympathetic with" North Korea. All of this coupled with Sony's new movie about James Franco and Seth Rogen assassinating lil Kim and it just smells funny.

Unless we are to believe North Korea has that level of hacker within their government.

Regardless, I don't mind reporting on what is contained in the e-mails, but it is not like it is a story of national importance or anything.

I agree. Wasn't it a news agency caught hacking into other sources? What would prevent them from hacking a media company's e-mails to generate a little buzz?

It's being "widely reported" that it's the North Koreans but yeah, who knows....
I guess it depends whose Ox is being gored.
But I just hate playing into their hands.
Next month it will be MSNBC gleefully reporting on the porn collections of the guys at the RNC.
God knows I love the thought of sanctimonious Hollywood types squirming.
But it just rubs me the wrong way because I think I see where this is headed privacy-wise.
I can see Putin putting his guys TO WORK against US business interests.

I see what you're saying, but there are still free market forces at work within the media in regards to competing to get a story first and what will drive views and page clicks.

I just don't see how a "gentleman's agreement" amongst the media to not report on information obtained salaciously would work in actuality.

Yeah I agree. I guess we just do a tit for tat thing. We reveal their shite, they reveal ours.
It's a brave new world. No information secure, everybody fair game.
I would think the good thing was to not overly-sensationalize it, and report that the source of the information has bad intentions so that the reader/viewer is able to put it in perspective.
It's really a journalistic issue I guess.
