what famous unsolved cases have we really had since the introduction of dna?

the green river killer was captured, BTK, etc.

they really couldn't reasonably identify anyone in the zodiac other than Arthur Lee Allen and a couple of others who have all been cleared and none of them were perfect suspects.

I don't think there will ever be a series of unsolved murders that garner such exposure and attention for decades

Gary Ridgeway murdered dozens of people before he got caught, and he was high functioning mentally challenged. I think people overestimate forensics and such.

I would think if a serial killer truly wanted to kill and not get caught they would greatly expand the area in which they select their random victims and change up the actual method.

The police would never know they were looking for a serial killer if there were never any similarities to the crimes.

There are probably serial killers on the loose right now.

oh absolutely...larger kill zone, dump the bodies a far ways away...it wouldn't be hard; however, serial killers kill because of a compulsion, they don't start with "I want to plan a series of murders with the sole intent of fooling the cops"

you change up the victims, the place, where you dump, how you kill and it's impossible to nail the guy unless they jack off and leave fingerprints. Kind of like the ripper, you'd have to catch him in the act.

Impossible to know and that's why I don't believe the statistics...it's hard enough finding one you know about, but it's harder to find the ones you don't (which I suspect is the case more often than not)

gary ridgeway wasn't hyper intelligent like ted bundy

he brought his child along for one of his kills...he also left tons of dna evidence

he evaded capture for so long because he was killing prostitutes and street rats that no one would report missing, then he brought their bodies to the wilderness, where they'd be badly decomposed by the time they were discovered

harder to catch them when you don't have a crime scene

bundy actually suggested to the FBI, who were really just interested in analyzing him, that when they found the next body to leave it there and stake it out because he'd come back...turns out that's exactly what he was doing

Most estimates are that there are at least 15 and up to 50 or 100 uncaught serial killers in the US at any one time. Of course there will be many who are never caught.

Look at the Long Island serial killer - guy has killed at least seven (IIRC) and probably more in just the last seven or eight years. They have no clue who that is.

As powerful as forensics are, they are still tools created by humans, and as such, there will be people who figure out ways around them. It's the same thing in high tech warfare.

BTK would have gotten away had he not resumed contacting the media and police.

O.J. wasn't a serial murderer, and again there was a suspect that was identified, that the evidence pointed to...a non conviction is irrelevant. He killed those 2 people and everyone KNOWS it

I wonder how many over the road truck drivers are serial killers. They have an easy set up. They are constantly moving, lots of easy targets (lot lizards), drive by hundreds of places almost daily to get rid of a body.

Drive to some random city. Make it a rainy night. Kill the first person you are alone with. Leave them in the rain. Do not leave any paper trail.

If nobody sees you how do they find you?

Like you said though, anybody who actually thinks of doing this is probably nuts and going to do some ritual that will get them caught.

yeah, an old man who was ignorant of technology.

like an old cowboy facing the dying west

he fricking scares me like crazy. There's a misconception that serial killers are smart...it's the same distribution.

Ted Bundy, and probably zodiac were crazy smart, but more often than not, they're gary ridgway or derrick todd lee

yeah, it's a compulsion

like a nicotine addiction...an obsession, it has to be just right to satisfy them
