the race is on for control of your home. Odd to me Microsoft , Google and Apple are lagging behind.

Is that "rules out" or "rolls out"?

I'd prefer being assraped by an ebola infected African with aids than turning over control of my light switches and deadbolt to a cable company. Can't wait to see the monthly price of this shite when the 12mo special is over.

Jeeze CAD.
This seems to be different from your Wink Hub in that it's an actual security system that just has the capability of controlling other things.

Cox Homelife is reinventing the services and options customers have available to them to help protect their home, family, time and budget. Professionally monitored home security service plans start at $29.99 and include a free basic equipment package with a three year agreement and additional Cox services. Or customers can upgrade to preferred service for only $10.00 more and enable remote home control capability.

My wife was in AT&T store last week and she brought home a price sheet with AT&T's line of home security/automation packages.

here's where it starts to add up
+$10 - we add 2 lightbulbs
+$10 - we add another deadbolt
+$10 - we add a motion sensor...
i bet you they're happy to keep adding 'cable tiers' to your monthly bill as you add doo-dads.

wait so i cant install a $300 'security sytem in a box' and pay someone $10/mo to monitor it?
$30/mo ***PLUS*** 3 year locked in plan is already over $1,000.00+ and that's for just the 'base' package and no guarantee that $29 price doesn't increase after the first 12 month 'special.
who the frick would sign their life away for 3 years to some shite-arse scheme in 2014?

I agree with you Cad. I hate Cox with a passion - but they provide the only viable Internet for me. I am addicted to their bandwidth.
They are smart to get into home automation though because there are a lot of people who want the turnkey benefits without having to "tinker" like you and I enjoy.

Are they hiring all new techs? Because in my experience cable installers can't even figure out static public IPs or understand NAT or local IP addressing. How are they going to setup home automation?

i'm a tinkerer for sure.
take my new schlage deadbolt for example. that's quickly becoming my favorite 'home automation product by far
it has ANSI Grade 1 commercial security strength (you should have seen the size of those son'bitch screws i drove into the door jamb)
it is on my home network and i get a notfication every time its locked or opened.
it has a built in alarm with FOUR levels of security:
1. you can set it to beep when it opens
2. it will go off if someone enters the wrong code a certain # of times (which you can set)
3. it will go off if it detects someone tampering with the lock or door jamb
4. it will fricking pierce your ears with a decibel crazy loud alarm if it detects excessive force like someone using a crowbar or something.
on top of that, you can customize the amount of pressure before it reacts.
i spent a day just testing all this out until i was happy.
i like knowing what the hell is going on with the doo-dads in my house..not installed by some minimum wage cable guy with a power drill and screwdriver.

They'll just half-arse install it and leave it fricked up.

That's fine and well for you and anyone else who likes to DIY.
There are lots and lots of stupid and/or lazy people out in the world who will pay for home automation.

This should be interesting, I clean up so many messes after cox does an install its crazy. I hope for my sake that they can get the word out about automation and security. I'm practically giving it away and no one around here cares. TigerGman
