I got to thinking after I was in an accident with two scummy people that tried to blame it on me, and a speeding ticket that falsely reported I was going 10mph over what I was actually driving...

Why don't I own a dashcam?? It's irrefutable evidence that I can cover my own arse with. Even the nicest models are less than $300, and the benefits and peace of mind would be well worth it.

Plus, maybe you'll catch some crazy things on it while you drive, too.

Anyone own one? Thinking about getting one this Christmas.

I paid $60 for one, good quality video, still haven't caught anything awesome yet.

Two questions:

1.) Does this model show the speed you're driving?
2.) Is it inconvenient to keep charged, turn on, etc? In other words, how seamless is it with your driving experience?

It does not show speed unless you want to aim it at your speedometer or gps unit with a speed indicator. I have mine mounted under the rear view mirror with the power cable ran above the passenger side sun visor. I'm sure with a little motivation, one could run the mini usb cable more cleanly, it's pretty long.

Sweet. I noticed there's a capacitor-based model as well for warmer climates.

have had mine for 3 months now after watching all of those Russian Dash cam videos on Liveleak. Paid $25 for mine on Amazon and have a 16 gig sd card in it.

I should say, I went through 2 other g1w cameras, one of which was that capacitor model, which were defective, either shutting off after recording a few seconds or having a misaligned lens causing blurred video. The one I have now hasn't had any problems. I would try to buy through Amazon directly because third party sellers may make you pay for the return shipping. It's a China made camera so I'm sure quality control leaves much to be desired. Still the cheapest camera for the quality picture.

And to answer your other question, it powers on with that cable so I don't think about it at all.

I'll bet you can get a discount with your insurance company too. Would probably come out with more money in the long run.

I almost rear ended a truck last night that was pulling a trailer without functional lights. It was 6:00 at night so very dark and could not see that it was stopping. Would have been tough for me to prove the lights were out...he could've claimed the impact caused it.

I am buying a dashcam today. My coworker loves his. He paid $125 for it.

I have a blackvue dr-400g. It sits behind the rearview mirror. The power cable is run (under the roof and side panels) to a fuse tap. Records speed and gps. The speed reading is gps based, and thus is not applicable in court.

Took about 30 minutes to install once I got the right fuse tap. Would be 10 if I had to do it again now.

It works great, except that without their "black box" battery attachment it will not save the last 3-5 seconds of footage. Also I bought it off ebay so it occasionally yells at me in Korean.

Got it after some meth heads ran into me and lied about it.

This is a feature foshizzle does not want.

I have the G1W-C in my car. It works great. The only issue I ever have is that there is a 10% chance that when I turn my car on it will say "No SD Card Inserted" and I have to unplug/replug the cable connecting it and it works again.

The footage looks great and the audio recording was good enough to record a conversation between me and a police officer at a DWI checkpoint.

That's apparently why all 143 million Russians have one. Probably for the lulz, too, cause Russians suck at driving.

Yeah, it can incriminate as much as protect. It would have helped me with my bogus speeding ticket, though.

ETA: Maybe not after what tom said.

If litigation occurs and enough money is involved, I bet an accident reconstruction expert could measure time and distance of objects or road markings that the camera records in the background to estimate your speed.

Driving is a new thing to them

My last crash the person at fault tried to blame me saying I was speeding and driving reckless when he hit me. I turned my dash cam on just after the crash. It goes back 1 minute from the time you turn it on and it showed everything. I was doing a whopping 32 mph when he hit me in a 35 mph zone with no lane changes.

yeah but the big benefit is that it will shut down frivilous litigation with a quickness. no one wants to spend $1000 on an attorney to fight a case for an accident that was not their fault. if you get sued, you send them the video. no lawyer will take their case if the video shows you in the right.

or hell if you really want to screw them you just don't tell them that you have a dashcam video and wait for them to perjure themselves. i don't know if that's legal to withold the fact that you have a video, but damn would it be satisfying.
