Yes or No. Just listening to What's The Frequency Kenneth. Just a great song.

Absolutely. They made great music and were arguably the biggest catalyst in the 'indie' movement.

I'd say yes. One of the best and most influential alternative rock bands ever.

The first two REM songs I ever heard were South Central Rain and Driver 8. I was in high school and literally loved their music from the first time I heard them.

Exactly. Check out Carnival of Sorts and Living Well is the Best Revenge.

I disagree. As one of "the kids" I certainly found out about R.E.M. through radio play of the big hits, but really started liking them after digging through their back catalogue.

Yes. REM was the complete package as a band. They had critical success, commercial success and they have been influencing bands for the last 25-30 years. The run of albums from Murmur-Green was outstanding.
edit...7 Chinese Brothers happened to be playing on Spotify as I typed this.

Just listened to this song and the melody is good but the production value is absolutely horrible. The guitar, bass and drums all sound pretty terrible.

I listen to Dead letter Office more than anything after LRP.

In my mind, yes.

well considering it was a band on an independent record label that recorded in an all purpose recording studio in Charlotte with basically a shoestring budget in the 80's. You might would have inferior production quality to something out of New York or LA.

They pretty much took "indie" to uncharted territory.
Yes.
Yes.

They are a legendary band. They have a very good case for greatest American rock band, and their formation is actually epoch defining, as it marks the end of the punk period and the beginnings of ""college rock" which would eventually morph into "alternative".
REM are the fathers of one of the biggest genres of rock music. They are also the exemplar on how a band should move from an indie label to the majors, and still maintain artistic credibility while appealing to a massive fanbase. You simply cannot tell the story of American pop music without REM. that's how massive their influence is.
I'd put them on the same level as the Stones, Beatles, and Bob Dylan.
