but I was always a huge fan of Let's Active and the dBs.
Athens always gets the love but in the 80's there was some great music coming out of Carolina. Let's Active, dB's, The Connells, Flat Duo Jets, Southern Culture on the Skids, even the stoner metal band Corrosion of Conformity.

The Connells

Graham Parsons melded country and Rock and then REM and others took that and ran with it.
I can see it with a lot of the Southern college(indie) bands.
One name I haven't seen mentioned is just before REM there was a little band from Athens called the B-52's. They were pretty alternative back in the day in the truest sense. I wouldn't put them on the level of REM but they became a little popular by the mid to late 80's.

The Pixies are a band far more popular 10 years after they broke up than during their prime. I think if you would've told someone in 1989 that the Pixies would be, by the end of the next decade, considered one of the most influential bands of the decade, they would not believe you. But they were not that popular during their heyday.
I've been preaching this and I still have trouble with it. To be honest, I prefer Frank Black solo stuff, but I'm not saying what the Pixies did was bad. But in 1990, The pixies may have not cracked the top 10 of popular alternative bands.
Another band like that is Talking Heads. I feel they receive more praise and worship now b/c of the jam band fans than when there were actually active.

I prefer the Breeders to Frank Black. Kim Deal is pretty great, and I think she's the special sauce for that band (and I also think Joey Santiago should be mentioned among the absolute greatest guitarist ever).
Some of the thing Steve Albini said about the Pixies are hysterical. Sure, he's a jerk, but he is a huge voice of the American underground, and he's at his best when savaging something. And boy, did he savage the Pixies. And he even produced one of their albums.

About the same for me but I'd rank The Breeders ahead of The Pixies. It sounds like I'm hating on The pixies which is not my intentions.

Some people may not like them, but to say the arent legendary would not be accurate...
Like many have already stated.. they are the undisputed kings of american college/alternative/indie rock... that category thats hard to define in words, but you know what I'm talking about..

I use to sport this one. Some chick was walking around LSU campus selling them for like $10. I think the only reason I bought it was b/c she was a cute little hippie chick.

I had the one with a bicycle on it that I bought at the show at the Bayou. I still have the T I bought at the Sanger show on the Fables tour.

never got into husker du or the minutemen, but i spun the hell out of alot of fIREHOSE records, and i even liked their song "for the singer of REM"
"legendary" is kind of a strong word for REM, because their live shows were kinda sub-par in the big venues IMO. i saw 'em on the 'document' & 'monster' tours, and unless you were sitting in the first few rows, it was tough to dial into the experience. as far as the albums go, they've certainly earned their status. i'll even say 'new adventures of hi-fi" has aged wonderfully, and i'd put in my current top 3 REM albums....

I like REM okay but Michael Stipe is the most blowhardy pussy douche that ever douched. His rants and blogs on current events are cringe worthy.

He is a strange guy. I lived in a downtown loft in Athens in the early 90s right above an bar called the High Hat. WSP played there under the name "Bar Tab" one night as a benefit for Vic Chestnut. It was a private, invitation only party and the owner had arranged with me to use my loft for the after party. There was a stairwell that led from the back of the bar to the second floor and this allowed all the "Athens Music Royalty" attendees to easily go between the bar and my loft without going outside. There was, as expected, a huge crowd outside that bar once people realized who all was inside. Stipe, aside from standing against the wall the entire time acting aloof, made a hit on my roommate. Still laugh at my buddy today saying Stipe sensed the gay in him. It pissed him off that night though. John Keane was there as well as all the WSP guys. Lots of less notables that never hit it big like Jack Logan but it was mainly the long time Athens music scene people.
Looking at the flyer in the other post brought back memories. Pylon was a big deal and played a huge influence on that scene in the 80s. Still remember when all those bands played at the original 40 Watt Club location before it burned down.

The Minutemen were incredible, but fIREHOSE was a great band too... One of my favorite moments was having a conversation with Watt after a show at the Bayou.. He told me to fly the flannel properly, it must have a pocket...
I know someone mentioned them earlier, but The Feelies are another one... Crazy Rythms and The Good Earth are both excellent records!
Edit: actually, I was just reminded that he said two pockets...
The live totem pole EP is such a classic and their cover of PE's Sophisticated Bitch is great!
