Young (mid-20s) female friend of mine asked if I was familiar with Savannah, and unfortunately, I am not.

Has anyone from this board lived there or visited extensively? She's looking to possibly move there for a job opportunity.

No pics, TIA.

Where is the job.

It's pretty heavy with military and SCAD hipsters. City Market is cool, river street is a much more docile bourbon st.

It's very "touristy" and the food is "southern" and "fried". Pretty good bars and it's close to The coast and amazing golf in Hilton Head.

Rangers hang out in the bars on River Street, if she's looking to hook up with one.

She is single, but she's moving to further her career. Not hookup.

Not getting into specifics but it would definitely strengthen her resume.

I have heard that it's a primarily black city though, and she's hesitant about that.

Near the beach. The downtown area is nice, a large colonial-looking district...kind of French Quarter-ish in appearance. Watch "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" For more on it.

SCAD and Armstrong are pretty white... Savannah State is like Southern.

There are places, just like NOLA, where you walk down the wrong block or cross the wrong street you'll be in a bad way.

Where is the job?

Ok.

It's within a 10 mile radius of Hunter Army Airfield.

That includes Georgetown which isn't too bad. But also Garden City which is a shite hole.

Just tell her that the 3rd ID is based at Hunter and Ft. Stewart which translates to ~20k soldiers and they'll be everywhere when they're in garrison.

Tybee Island is close and is awesome in the summer and a great, super close beach.

As I said, I lived there for around 5 years and liked it a lot but I was ready to go. Tourists and soldiers got old after awhile.

eta: Oglethorpe Mall is pretty legit. Probably on par with Mall of LA..

I have been living in Savannah for about a year and a half. Great city especially for a young person. Great night life, really good restaurants, vibrant arts scene, beautiful parks, lots of different festivals. It is a majority black city but if you go out downtown it is almost all whites at all of the bars and restaurants. Also if you live on Wilmington Island it is all white and less than ten minutes from the beach. We love it here and I could see us living here the rest of our lives.
