Gerry DiNardo had a 10 win season and came within a game of winning the West twice while at LSU. He's a long damn way from being a great head coach, so there is some merit to the argument. If you can recruit LA and aren't completely braindead or out of your depth (Hallman), or don't let personal issues and squabbles get in the way (DiNardo in his last 2 years), you can win at LSU.

Archer couldn't recruit at all. He won with Arnsparger's players, but once the cupboard went bare, he went downhill fast. Hallman recruited well considering where the program was at the time, but he was so bad that he could fail at any program. He should be bound by law to pay Bret Favre a percentage of every football related check for the rest of his life.

DiNardo had early success thanks to a great staff and strong early recruiting. But he drove his two good coordinators away and, while he had a couple of highly rated classes, he went after too many players with grade risks and attitude problems. I think he only ranks as an average coach, but if he had stayed on his initial track, he likely could have sustained his level of success (7-9 wins) for a few more years until the SEC started really getting stronger across the board.

I really don't know much about Stovall, but from most accounts, he wasn't a very good coach.

I look at Les Miles and Cholly Mac, and see a pretty close likeness. Mac may have been a better coach, with Miles being the better recruiter. I think they both come out as above average coaches who have been (or were) able to punch a little above their level because of where they are (or were).

Put Miles back at OSU. How far does he ultimately take that program? He did a good job getting them out of the gutter, but even DiNardo was able to pull that off here. Would he have gotten them to the next level? How about if you put him at a school like Vandy or Kentucky? Would he be able to win at places where recruiting would be more difficult? That's what I mean when I say that LSU enhances what he is capable of.

We went through 8 coaches in 24 years. That ain't good bro.

I can point out Les did it with much less in state talent due to hurricanes.

Also the top two hardest schedules in LSU history were 2011 and 2007. Les won the sec and went to the title game in both.

88, 73, and 55 round out the top 5 toughest schedules in LSU history.
