agree with beHop.

You went from good, to great imo. Both of those bullets will give excellent penetration, the Barnes TSX or TTSX will beat the Nosler on weight retention, but in my book, the Partition was the gold standard until the solid copper bullets started coming out.

Are you going to handload or off the shelf?
Bolt action or semi-auto?

hard to beat

Never liked these for a rifle round. Goes straight through. Does a good job on a shoulder bone though.

Federal blue box is my go-to for every caliber. I've seen very good results with them in several calibers.

I reload Sierra Game King 165gr. I've had great results in accuracy and dropping deer. I shot one earlier this year and watched him run 20 yards and blood was everywhere. Federal sells this load at just about every store that carries ammo.
The 165gr nosler partition bullet is really for big bodied deer, Mule Deer, elk and up. It'll definitely kill a deer but may be to much for deer less than 200lbs. It really depends on the load/speed of the bullet.

You can't go wrong with Sierra Game King or Remington Core Lockt

Barnes TSX

All the serious hunters I know are shooting this bullet. The ones that can afford them buy up to 10 boxes at a time. The only downfall is they are hard as hell to find at your local dealer. I order mine online.

i've tried to 'improve' my ammo by looking at more expensive brands/types, but i always go back to CoreLokts. They are just so consistent and shoot straight.

Premium bullets are a waste of money for whitetail deer when using a .30-06.

I changed from a Core-Lokt to Hornady SST's in my 270 this season.

The first deer I shot was at 183 yards broad side and dropped it in its tracks. Double lung shot placement that incinerated the deer's innerds.

The second deer I shot was at 35 yards broad side behind the shoulder shot. She shot up 8' or so like a kangaroo and died when she hit the ground. The front shoulder was mutilated on this shot.

All in all, I have been extremely pleased with this round.

I shoot Barnes TSX for elk, but I don't think there's a better bullet for big game.

Ballistics test of most popular bullets.

Hornady superformance 165 SST's. Up vote, up vote.
My favorite 'off the shelf' deer bullet ever.
Hands down, my go to bullet for first time hunters. It puts the deer down, makes a big hole and leaves a great trail o' blood.

I like accubonds, but I have had them 'turn' or tumble upon entry.

Partitions are great.
Barnes are great.

Silver tips truly are the shittiest bullets ever. I shot only one deer with this bullet. It shattered like chalk into the deer and caused injury, but not vital injury. My buddy lost a monster 14 PT he shot with silver tip. We looked for three days and never got the deer.
Too many deer lost by friends to support using this bullet.

Sierra Game Kings have good performance and ballistic coefficient.

I shoot Barnes TSX out of one gun and Hornady STT out the other (couldn't find it in the caliber at the time).

The TSX has performed phenomenal. I would recommend that round to anyone. With all the money I've spent on my gun, scope, license, lease, ect. If it costs me an extra $10-20/box for rounds that's insignificant on the few times I send copper flying through the air a year.

ETA: I do have both Core-Lokt and Hornady FTX in my 35 Rem lever action.

Great point Citica......

All the $$ that goes into hunting.....why ever worry about saving a few bucks on bullets?

Right if I spent as much and shot as often as I do while duck hunting then I'm not buying tungsten matrix. Out of my rifle I can get atleast 3 seasons out of a box.

I'd spend more if I were competition shooting, shooting bigger game, or hunting whitetail from longer distances.

I've never even had a deer walk out at over 100 yds. My longest shot has been 70. The core lokts are as accurate as any round right there. The lead soft point will leave enough of a blood trail. And really if I can't put a good enough shot on a deer at 100 and in then the problem isn't the bullet.

I just think we as hunters overthink it too much. Along with everything else involved.

I would agree with that 100%. If I was still hunting Cat Island with a 75 yard average shot Core-Lokts would be more than sufficient, but I also wouldn't ever use my 7mag and a 14x Ziess in that.

I had the opportunity (not necessarily the ability) in the lease I was in last season to shoot in excess of 500 yards.

I've shot deer 200+ yards and your still not talking about huge drops in accuracy at that range between a Core-Lokt and a more expensive cartridge, but for what I pay to hunt a year I probably spend more on pop tarts and Little Deborah's a season than I spend on bullets fired at animals.

I love my Winchester XP3 but they are hard to find. they don't blow big holes, they drive deep and don't break up
