I'm not sure how much you know about Manning but after his arrest he demanded a sex change operation. That would make him transgender.
I'm not sure if he got one or not since then. But he used the term and I still don't understand what he means.

No, a cis male is a person who is born with a penis and identifies as a male. A trans male is a person who is born with a vagina and identifies as a male.
Neither label has anything to do with sexual orientation (homo or heterosexual).

Because apparently they both have to have labels, to be equal. Or something like that. Basically, having people born as males labelled "males" and people born as females who become males as "trans males" is supposed to make trans males feel less accepted, so they slap labels on both. That's my understanding anyway.
I support transgender rights but the whole "cis" labelling thing is just fricking weird IMO.

Cis is latin for "on this side of"
it is commonly used in chemistry for different molecular structures of the same complaint.
Basically the opposite of trans is cis.
Transgender is the opposite of Cisgender
As a word it makes perfect sense, but it is usually just used to remind people of there "privilege"

Your are cis because you were born with a penis and identify with being male. There used to not be a word for it because there was never a need to describe someone like this. The term "cis-gender" is an unnecessary qualifier.

I just think it's funny that people get all bent out of shape about the word "cisgender". It's needed in scientific settings and when speaking with someone transgendered in a counseling role.
