Not too long ago, rather than Bowflex or universal machine I decided to go with a Power rack + Free weight + Olympic barbell. I thought Lasik surgery was the best money I've spent in my life but this purchase actually surpassed that and literally changed my life.

Day after heavy squat day = time to fap. I love my post leg day fap (serious)

Power rack $450 shipped Amazon
300LB weight plate & Olympic Barbell = $210 at Dick's sporting goods was the cheapest I found. I'll add more weith later on
2 Horse stall mats $40 X 2 at Tractor Supply
Bench $70-$150
Weight tree $30 at Walmart

Why not a simple rack with bench, bar at top, simple cable maybe. Barbells and some dumbells, adjustible dumbell system at least. I feel like you get more mileage out of that than some bowflex type deal.

WTF?

But I'd definitely rather that set up plus a bench than some cable system or bowflexx

Roger. I can't really help with suggestions, the systems like that I've had to use (which have all been at hotels or condos and the like) universally suck. But, that's me comparing it to my usual free weights so YMMV

I have a pullup bar, a couple of chairs to do dips between, and a backpack that I fill with sand. The sand goes in 1 QT zip loc bags so I can vary the weight. Each bag holds about 3 lbs of sand. I bought the bar, the sand, and the zip locs. The rest I already had. Total cost about $35.

Pullups will make you strong as a mug. Get some dumbells and a mat and you can do some serious work.

Tell him to join planet fitness.

$10/month, it'll take 17 years to equal the cost of a bow flex, and he can jerk off to a bunch of out of shape blue hairs.

Hahah. Again, he wants a home gym and I'm not trying to talk him out of it.

I'm bookmarking this , I'm in my late 40's and have been thinking about a home gym also. When I was a young man, I liked the free weights.I think when you get older( like myself) you like the idea of a home gym. I live out in the sticks, so a membership to a fitness center wouldn't work. At my age I just want to get fit again. I'm 6'3" 235, I started dieting in July ...I was at 270 then. Just started eating better and doing some jogging....thinking about a bowflex also

I agree with Phat Phil. A classic system like a power rack and free weights never go out of style. I bought mine from Fitness Factory Outlet many years ago. The brand is Body Solid. There is a lifetime warranty on everything. After about 15 years of heavy use a cable broke. I called the company and sure enough, I was sent a new cable free of charge. It might be the best $1500 I ever spent.

1. A set of adjustable dumbbells
2. A bench
3. A good structured program like what Sabi mentioned.

No need to drop a few grand on a gadget that won't work any better than the above.

Tips: You can do just about any exercise with a barbell but if I have to choose the best one it has to be squats. Squatting does wonders to testosterone levels.

quote:

Studies have shown that exercises that build the quadriceps (the large muscles on the front of the thigh) increase blood flow to the penis by more than 21 percent within a mere half-a-minute. This tremendous increase in the blood supplied to the penis is equal to a sexual rocket-launching.

Study Shows Squats on Par with Viagra for Some

Massive blood flow to the penis = Time to Fap

Phat Phil- I like that setup. Do you know what brand the rack is that you bought from Amazon? I searched power rack on Amazon and got several different types.
