I realize that in the Gumpland fairy tale it is under penalty of death to even think Saban would not have been welcomed back by Skip.

I don't doubt that saban would have entertained an LSU offer if the job was open, and I don't doubt that Skip would've welcomed him back. I doubt completely that saban was behind scenes angling for miles to be fired and saban to get that job. I don't think he mad the slightest effort to that end.

In before some idiot tries to claim he met with boosters in Monroe in 2007 to try to get job back.

So, Saban tried to come back and they turned him down?

And LSU fans are proud of that?

That's fricking retarded.

You have to understand that Saban was an intolerable a-hole by the time he left. He had just pissed off some major $$$ people and was making it known the NFL was his next stop.
Fast forward a few years and Skip is thinking they found what they had wanted all along: a likeable coach that was winning at a level similar to Saban. Think he would just fire Miles? Skip was many things but he wouldn't cross that line.
Yes, I am glad Nick , his agent, or whoever was inquiring told him no thanks.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take Saban back in a heartbeat.
Just, not like that. You know, like what Bama did to Shula? Just seems dirty.

Laugh all you want - Miles lost to AU then FL. One more loss and Saban was back.
MIles runs the table, we blow out Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl and rest is history. Remember telling my wife after that Sugar Bowl that we were watching the peak of LSU football

This board? You mean the board who's sole purpose was to troll Bama fans last offseason? Who cares?

What did we do to Shula? We probably would have given him another year if he would agree to make changes to his staff.

"The spin job has been going on ever since."

Hilarious to hear this from LSU fans. My brother lives in New Orleans and politely listened while LSU neighbors and co-workers would condescendingly tell him about how much the Saban's hated it in Tuscaloosa and how Saban wanted the LSU job back. This was even well into the 2008 season. The guy has been there a month short of 8 years and people STILL try to convince themselves they are miserable in Tuscaloosa....lol.

Rich Rodriguez either turned down the Alabama offer or, if some are to be believed, was informed by Alabama that they were going in a different direction.

Anyone remember this? It was either posted on Rich Rod's own page or something from BAMA...but it wasn't fan generated. That tag has been put on later. Then shite went south and it got pulled down shortly after...

Feelers were definitely sent out, Champ. Nick was still VERY much in touch with LSU booster at that time, as he'd only been gone less than two years.

One of my clients at the time was a huge booster and tight with Nick. He called Nick shortly after taking the job with BAMA and asked with what the frick he was thinking. You guys were a tire fire at the time, remember? Nick said they wanted back in college and it was the best job available and he'd make it work.**

Key word was available...and I had heard from this guy weeks before that Sexton was asking questions inside the AD. It obviously didn't go anywhere because Miles was doing well and frankly not a dickhole to work with.

** ETA: In regards to the "make it work," bit. That was about the BAMA inability to wait things out for "The Process" to kick in. BAMA fans are delusional, after all...and Nick Saban has never been one to tolerate that kind of lip from a fan base. The thought of him trotting out "catastrophe syndrome" to you guys after a loss seemed funny.

Mal wAnted Saban. He had talked to Sexton and was told that there was in trust by Saban but he had to wait until after the NFL season was finished.
The board got a case of the nerves and had talked to RR about taking the job.
Mal was told to go to Fl to the coaches convention and hire RR.
They met and came to a understanding . Mal wanted RR to fly back from Fl with him to UA and have a press con. RR told Mal that he had to go back to WV and tell his players by before the announcement . He went back to WV and met with his president and got a big raise.
F-Bomb did talk shite about RR wife. And she supposedly heard about it.
Sexton and Mal talked and Mal was told that Saban would come after his season was over .
Mal went to Fl and talked to Saban and his wife. That was when Saban made up his mind.
Then he told the owner of his team that he was taking the job at AU.
This is the way it went down .

I typed this on an iPhone so sorry about mistakes

I remember listening to Finebaum that day. I thought the criticism Of Rich's wife was cruel and mean spirited... We were the butt of many a joke in that 27 day period. Trying to remember some of the better ones..... For a good laff

Like I said...BAMA was the best job available...but make no mistake, Nick and Sexton were both in contact with folks back in Baton Rouge testing waters early in 2006 when he was flailing in Miami. Shula was never more than a Band-Aid hire after multiple frick-up hires. As soon as it became apparent he wasn't the guy they had no qualms with tossing him under the bus, whether his Dad was made upset by it or not. Not sure why this should be either a surprise or a point of contention for you guys. The guy had made some great relationships with some boosters and, at least in his mind, left on good terms. When he realized the NFL had been a mistake, it's natural to have reached out first to the beast he had just come from.

The funniest thing about that whole ordeal was how tone deaf Nick was that what the reaction was going be to him after taking the job. when my guy told him what was gonna happen, he didn't believe him! haha My client kept telling him that had he gone somewhere outside of the SEC it would have been one thing, but inside and to BAMA? You could literally see Saban actually stunned by LSU fan reactions shortly after taking the job...dude never got it.

They were an OT loss away from being in ATL. Losing Brody croyle the year before then prothro the year after was sheer bad luck for Shula.

I wonder if bama would have ever hired him if he hadn't won a title at LSU? Nick had aspirations to go to the NFL, I think winning one just pushed it a long quicker, but he was always going to leave LSU.

For any of the saints fans, if you read Drew Bree's book, he wanted to play in Miami. Just whoever was informing saban said his arm wouldn't hold up and the rest is history.

During Saban's flirtation with the Dolphins, Skip was clear that it wasn't about money, and that LSU would not offer any type of monetary incentive to keep him.

Now, that may have been because Saban had told him he was already gone and Saban dragged out the Huizenga dance for effect. Or, it may have meant that Bertman was tired of the dance and would have still been tired of it two years later.

Assuming the first, if Miles had lost the Tennessee game in 06, Skip may have been more willing to throw him under the bus, and bring back Saban. That said, with Alabama also in the mix, it would have been hard to do so. Once Alabama fired Shula, it was pretty clear that Saban was on the minds of the power brokers in Tuscaloosa. Bertman couldn't have fired a 9-3 Miles without cause and not have Saban already on the plane back. Saban spent all of December denying that he was leaving the Dolphins because every coach in that position has to lie when asked that question. The fact that the Alabama media, and especially Finebaum, kept the rumor alive means that LSU simply had no way they could have horned in on him if they had wanted to.

Bottom Line: Don't trust rumors, trust press conferences where the coach puts on the new hat.
