Rich Rodriguez either turned down the Alabama offer or, if some are to be believed, was informed by Alabama that they were going in a different direction.

There are some who say Sexton called Mal Moore and asked what the hell he was doing. Mal said that they were concerned about losing the recruiting class if they didn't act soon and felt confident Rich Rod could do well. Sexton then told him "if you'll just wait you'll never have to worry about recruiting again".

Either way, Rich Rod was officially no longer a candidate on 12/8 and Bama waited 27 days before finally landing their next HC in Nick Saban.

Side Point - maybe Michigan is willing to take a similar gamble and wait.

Beginning to think this is the case.

They clearly are. There isnt much of a downside. The recruiting class already fell apart.

Finebaum pissed Rich Rod's wife off on the radio. Got them to reconsider what they were about to step into.

That's one possibility. That's not the one that is outlined by Armen Keteyian in his book The System, nor is it the version Mal Moore privately shared with people in the days from 12/8 - 1/4/07.

That program is such disrepair at the moment there is no rush to hire someone other than to get their guy before someone else does. They dont have a top ten recruiting class waiting to see what happens. Much like Texas they will take their time.

Thanks for your contribution. There was no chest thumping or circle jerking in the OP. It was a statement of fact that on this date in 2006 Rich Rod was eliminated (either by himself or Bama, depending on who you listen to) as a candidate for the HC job. His elimination ultimately led to Saban becoming the HC. It's relevant and timely, particularly to Michigan fans who find themselves in a very similar situation.

Moore had to plan just in case Skips response to the, "Fire Les & please take us back" query wasn't a politely worded, "frick you".

Meh, I tend to believe this is a myth perpetrated by Finebaum to make him seem far more influential than he actually is.

I've heard him beat his chest about this before, which only further makes me think it's untrue.

I realize that in the Gumpland fairy tale it is under penalty of death to even think Saban would not have been welcomed back by Skip.
Now run along, I'm sure there is a lonely sheep waiting for you.

I would say you've got to be joking BUT you are a gump.

Facts are below

Rich Rod and anybody else listening turned down the job in tuscaloser. So the gumps got a truckload of money so $abes would break his Miami contract.

The spin job has been going on ever since.
