What kind of fan base do schools like McNeese, SLU, NSU and Nicholls have?

Is it enough to economically justify these programs' existence? Seems to me if we are going to have a serious conversation about closing or merging 4-year schools (as happens frequently on the OT), then we need to figure out whether the athletic departments are part of the money problem.
How many people attend a Nicholls game?

SLU went to the FCS playoffs two years in a row and its first baseball super regional back in June. I'd say they're on the up and up, but I'm biased.

You worry about what's going on in your part of the world and let us worry about Hammond, America

People who didn't attend college do not root for McNeese, SLU, Nicholls, ULM, etc.
The guy pictured is probably a huge Tigahs fan calling for Miles to be fired.

Honestly, no. But that goes for most programs. Of the 228 division I public athletic programs, only 23 managed to cover their own expenses in 2012. All the others plus 16 of those 23 received subsidies.
quote:Not many. But attendance honestly doesn't make that much money back for athletic events. TV contracts are where the big money is. So for FCS conferences like the Southland that don't have a TV contract for most sports and only a limited one for football, it basically becomes impossible to make money.

Did they go to a Super Regional I don't remember? Pretty sure Houston won the Baton Rouge Regional to go to the Super Regional.

quote:This would be correct. SLU beating Bryant in the LSU regional was SLU's first postseason win since 1992. Maybe that's what he meant.

They are also the third largest public university in the state by enrollment (behind LSU and ULL).
They also lead the nation in students of Livingston and Ascension descent.

Here's all the Louisiana public division I schools together for a little snapshot.
This is athletic department revenue minus subsidies and expenses. Not a perfect number to calculate profit, but it's in the ballpark.

Nicholls State -$4,215,256

You don't need the "public" qualifier. LSU, ULL, and SLU are the three biggest schools regardless.

UNO does that without football...

This x100. It seemed like when I was at SLU, everyone either graduated from EA or Denham Springs High.
