Not the kind of return anyone was hoping for. The were 41-13 in the 3 years prior to the deal.

Hand him a blank check, they said. He should get whatever he wants, they said. He's worth all that and then some, they said.

We fricking sold our soul for the Super Bowl. And that's just a natural fact.

People complaining about his pay need to look up QB contracts.

Look to the guards getting $21 million (both top 5 in pay) while completely shitting the bed. Look to us sticking with Charles Brown for too long last year.

Look to Byrd being the highest paid S in the NFL. Look to Vaccaro completely falling off.

Look to our 2nd draft pick not seeing the field while completely missing on our #2 FA corner in Champ Bailey.

Not to mention what happened with 2012

Or just logic

Please tell me how Jahri's fall has anything to do with the Brees contract

we have no defense, a suspect o line, and questionable play calling this season and youre going to scrutinize the one player we have thats not a question mark?

it takes a LOT more than just a QB to win. Like 21 other players who if they were half as good at their position as Brees is at his position would make us perennial SB contenders.

I am not criticizing Drew Brees at all. Just pointing out a fact.

If Drew would have taken less money the Saints could afford better players and had better depth. Drew is a HOF QB but he can't do it by himself. and 24-23 says I'm right.

That's not a coincidence. Every team with a 20 mil QB is hamstrung. Some obliviously have better front offices than others. Sucks for us.

Except our highly paid players are hurting us.

Jahri and Grubbs - highly paid players who aren't getting it done.

Byrd - highest paid S in the league, IR

We missed on our #2 draft pick and Champ Bailey was a miss.

Yet other teams with similar pay are getting it done...

I have a few issues with Brees' contract. And the first issue is exactly how it's going to affect this ballclub in the next two years. His cap hit is $26.4 mil next year ($14.8mil dead money) and $27.4 mil in 2016 ($7.4 mil dead money). Contracts like those mean that you can't afford to make ANY mistakes with all your other players. And in order to make things work, Loomis has had to kick the can on down the road at times. Look at Jahri Evans' contract. Cap hit of around $11 mil the next three years. Ben Grubbs has a cap hit of around $10 mil the next two years. They inexplicably gave Junior Galette the contract he now has. He's a cap hit of almost $16 mil next year. Jairus Byrd will cost the Saints an average of $10 mil over the next five seasons. NOT TO MENTION Jimmy Graham. The Brees contract meant we HAD to be right with all those other contracts, PLUS catch lightning in a bottle with some cheap players and UDFA's in order to be successful.

And that's just not working out. None of the gambling is paying off right now.

The big contracts being sucked up by a select few on this roster meant that we could not keep players like Darren Sproles, who has, in turn, made the Saints look like the chumps they are this season.

Which is why we'll extend him at the same rate this offseason

We save $6 million by cutting Evans and $3.6 million by cutting Grubbs

How is that inexplicable?

No, we made a choice there. We could have easily kept him if we wanted to. We chose other players over him.

Yeah we should have held out and just let him walk. We'd probably have a couple superbowls by now.

5 years/$100 million gets us 24 wins

I wonder what happens if Drew takes 5 years/$80 million?

Maybe $20 million worth of other players that could have helped Drew win another SB?

I'm sure you'd be more than willing to take a 20% pay cut to help your company, right.

Not to mention the FO chose to let him play his last year without an extension when they had more leverage for a cheaper contract

Of course not, a good company would cut my pay without giving me a choice if it was negatively affecting the company.

I don't think it's smart to look at it as Brees fault. The staff has likely made bad decisions all along. But when your paying an elite QB peanuts, you can hit at a 50/50 rate. Now that we are paying market for a QB, who is indeed declining, that rate needs to be much better. Play calling is shite and we rarely seem to have an effective gameplan. Two terrible guards making ridiculous money is a bad idea. Graham playing hurt is not helpful. 75% of our starters missing TC hurt chemistry and dissolved any chance of consistency. Talent evaluation is awful, draft choices rarely pan out. Long story short... We aren't a good franchise right now. I have no idea how to fix it. Hopefully someone making millions from being employed by the Saints does.

I've been killed on here for bringing this up.

Brees is an amazing talent and I don't know if we had any choice.

But that contract has proved to not be a win for the Saints. Hence the record you brought up.

It's probably what Loomis will have to do, which is certainly not ideal for an aging quarterback.

And replace them with _______ that have been groomed?

quote:

How is that inexplicable?

Because they gave an outstanding contract (for him, that is) to a player with one good season who still had another year on his original contract.

quote:

No, we made a choice there. We could have easily kept him if we wanted to. We chose other players over him.

No, the Saints SOLD it to us that his best years were behind him, which we now know was a bunch of bullshite, and that we were just ready to move on. Or maybe they really believed that. Shame on them if true.

Sproles was a "luxury" we couldn't afford. Now he's off being dynamic for another team, while dynamics is one of the many things missing from this once-great offense.
