Best coffee/espresso maker for Christmas?

Anyone have combo coffee and espresso maker recommendations? My wife has been mentioning getting one for a while now. Some of them get pretty pricey. I don't mind spending a little extra money if it's worth it, but I don't have a clue about what ,Ames one better than the other. Any rec's would be greatly appreciated.
Also, not real sure on price range yet.

Forget dual purpose machines. A decent, midrange espresso machine isn't worth the trouble without a burr grinder, so put that in the budget too.
Have you sampled Nespresso machine pod espresso? Quality is surprisingly good for the ease of use.

But then you're stuck dealing the pods. I know because someone gave me one. It makes pretty decent stuff, but the pods are a racket. You can pretty much only buy them through the website, and their customer service is a joke and they make you buy them in increments of 20. That and my machine seems to have a mind of it's own, and Anthony in New Delhi can't seem to help me solve the problem.

For espresso, don't skimp on the grinder as previously mentioned. The Baratza Virtuoso is the one I use and considered a good grinder for the money. Much cheaper than that, and they don't produce very even grinds.
I'm a fan of that site I linked to as well. Tons of good video reviews that actually show each machine being used and give feedback. They also have some good refurb deals on there.
Not a fan of combo machines. Personally, I'd buy a good grinder, decent refurb espresso maker (Saeco makes solid stuff) and a french press. That is the cheapest entry to good coffee across the board.
ETA: you will also need a tamper if you don't get a pressurized portafilter.

+1 on the Baratza Virtuoso, that's exactly what I have. It gave great service for 5+ years, then a steel roller went bad. Baratza sold me higher quality ceramic replacement rollers, which weren't difficult to swap out. So I give 'em an A+ on customer service.
RE: Nespresso, the machines have a decent warranty. If you get a bum one, just return it. The pods have their plusses and minuses; if you regularly make decaf and caf, it's nice to be able to switch back and forth without emptying the grinder, etc. If you need caffeine before you can function in the AM, it's hard to beat the 30-second warm up and instant gratification of the pods. Also very clean/neat....I have one in my office, where a burr grinder & non-automatic espresso machine would be far too messy. Pods seem expensive, but it's way cheaper than the nearest shot of decent espresso. I can walk to a coffeeshop w/a La Marzocco & custom roasted beans, but the quality of the resulting espresso varies widely with the operator's skill...
