A bunch of my neighbors are looking to run dogs on some property outside of Abita Springs to shoot some deer. Is it hard keeping track of 25 dogs running through the woods. Don't want to shoot any of the dogs next week and want some feedback on how careful I need to be on this. We will have twenty guys deer hunting with 25 dogs.

I did a lot of this along with my family when I was young...

you don't have to worry about the dogs, as it is not like the deer are running through the woods with a pack of 25 dogs right behind them...deer are just basically slipping out of the area long before the dogs get there because of the ruckus that people and dogs create...dogs will be basically meandering with their noses to the ground and barking if they are on the trail of a deer...

the main thing to be careful of is that no one shoots in the direction of anyone else or in the direction of the guy driving with the dogs...

That's a lot of dogs, most I've ever been on a hunt with is 15 and it can get pretty hectic.

Also, prepare yourself for some butthurt OBers who will bitch about running dogs.

agreed, that is more than I have hunted with as well...I wouldn't want to try to walk around the area where they let them all out of the cages, as there will be wall to wall dog shite...

If you throw out 25 dogs at once you will learn real quick why it's called "dog hunting".......probably need to say goodbye to a few of them that you won't see for awhile if ever again

Only time I witnessed dog hunting was a bunch of hunters from Texas hunting on the border near Toledo Bend, they wasted far more dogs than they killed deer.

Theywon't throw out all 25 at once...they will rotate the dogs so you constantly have fresh dogs running the race
Eta as previously stated no worry shooting the dogs the deer will be far ahead of them...be ready it is a blast

I've never hunted with dogs but camps around us do. Seems to me they spend more time hunting the dogs than deer. Dogs don't know the property lines. My favorite story is when a group came to our camp looking for dogs and started loading them up. Then the guys that owned about half of the dogs they were loading up showed up looking for their dogs. We just said good night and went back into the camp,to let them sort it out.

You don't have to worry about shooting a dog, they can't keep up with the deer. I've seen them get pretty close to a doe once but still they weren't right on her arse. At least I hope you won't shoot a dog, somehow people mistake other humans for deer and we look a lot less like a deer than a dog does. Idk how much land it is but with 20 other excited hunters in the woods, I'd prefer to be in a stand on a pipeline or shooting lane. If that's not possible, I'd have so much orange on, I'd look like a pumpkin. And weapon of choice for woods hunting over dogs from the ground would be my 12ga with buckshot. Good luck and be safe.

25 dogs is wayyyyyyyyy too many.

We have a shitload of land and people, and we used to run 4 or 5. 3 is plenty enough. If you have one good trailing dog and one good running dog the rest is just for sound effects.

OP, how much land y'all hunting?

Used to love hunting with dogs, but we were hunting 9k acres of land. Loved to be the pusher. We hunted with around 20 dogs, but would turn them and drive them in different areas at the same time.

I grew up dog hunting..IMO there is no greater rush than hearing a pack of big mouthed hounds that are giving it all they got and coming straight to you. After doing it long enough you will be able to tell, by how the dogs sound and the path they are taking through the woods, what they are likely running. Also depending on the terrain and types of trees they are in the sound carries different. You always have to be on your game...always looking for a "sneaker" as we called it. Now I am missing my childhood....damn...lol.

Dog hunting was always more of a social even for me. Hearing the dogs run. Cutting up on the CB. Riding around the club. As a teen it was lots of fun.

Yep, I spent more time as a kid chasing dogs than I ever did actually hunting. Still wouldn't trade it for a thing. Listening to the old timers tell stories and getting to be in the woods was all it was really about. We probably could have killed way more deer if we traded the dog food for corn, but some great memories.

I hunted with a club when younger than ran dogs. Ive killed off of the dogs but I would prefer still hunting now days.

My advice is to get ready as soon as you hear them get hot. That deer will be wayyy out in front. The bucks run straight and will make a beeline outta there. The does run big circles at times and sometimes back track to throw off the dogs.

Can be exciting but I just dont care for it anymore.

Killed my first buck in front of a bluetick. Was only 14 and the second time deer hunting. Hear someone calling my cousin's name. Charlie, Charlie and so on, but kept getting closer. Little buck was less then 15 yards when I started shooting empting out my gun. 12ga, 3" OO buckshot. To this day, I still have some of the buckshot pellets and tag. A group picture of the hunters,8 of us from the age of 7 to 16.

The funny part was once the dog showed, it started biting the deer which freaked me out. Started kicking that dogs arse not knowing any better. Then I had to drag the deer across a few slue bottoms with about 3' of water. Freaked out again when my deer was sinking.

Oh the fun back then.
