No hurt in equipping them. There are some gems that do elemental damage, i.e., bolt and fire, and if you use them on a str or skill build it will scale off of arcane and do way less damage.

I put my blood gem on my axe. Don't know what it does though. 
After making what seemed like zero progress last night, I started a new character and beat the Cleric Beast and Father Gas tonight. I might actually be getting decent at this game after feeling hopeless the first try.
I accidentally killed that witch puddle thing in the cathedral looking place right after fighting Father Gas. I didn't frick up did I? She dropped a rune or something when I killed her. She said "I just wanted to help!" as she died.

You fricking bastard. You're a horrible person. 
You killed the one nice person in the game. Sure, he looked a little eh, unwell. But he had a good heart and was looking to help out the poor people of the city.
There's a point later in the game when you can do something awful and he starts blaming himself and screaming and crying it was his fault. I felt really bad for him.

So once you beat the three witches in the woods...seems like that place is done? I got the workshop from besting her hut not sure what that does.
Where should I head next? I'm guessing Paarbarl Beast. But I feel like I should find the connection from Cathedral to the unseen village before skipping to it.
