Are the Pelicans really a playoff team?

All offseason I read about how the Pelicans were closer to a playoff team, this team doesn't exactly look like a playoff team imo.

Anthony Davis is a stud and emerging as one of the top 5 players in the game but he needs a decent amount of help. Would missing the playoffs and getting a top 10 pick help the Pelicans more than a possible 8th seed and 1st round exit?

Eric Gordon is a waste of roster space (yes I know a lot agree with this) but why is Jimmer getting playing time?

No. You have OKC, Phoenix and Sacramento fighting for the last spot in the brutal West. I don't think it's in the cards for the Pelicans this season.

In the east they would be a top 4 team.

January - March is the softer part of the schedule. That's when we'll see if they have what it takes. They should gain enough ground to end up with a win total in the upper 40s. The question is will that be enough or do you need 50 wins for the 8 seed this year.

We traded our 1st to Houston for Asik. There is protection on the pick but I believe we only keep it if we're bottom 3 or 20 and above. So basically if we win the lottery or make the playoffs we keep our pick, any other situation and Houston keeps it. If you think a draft pick this year helps the team you want them in the playoffs so they can keep the pick.

No, he was a waste of cap space, but I'm fine giving him a roster spot. He was actually playing very good on defense and provided spacing on offense. He may not be even close to worth his contract, but he was significantly better than any other options we have available to us.

Welp,

As of now, no. But purely because of lack of depth.

Anthony Davis is the 3rd best player in the league of not the best (statistically).

Eric Gordon is a lot better than some people on this board think he is; maybe he's overpaid but since he's been out we've looked much worse, which goes back to lack of depth.

All things considered, if we can improve our bench with our recent signings and get any kind of production out of them I think we'll give it a run.

I don't even agree with this, team has not looked this season. I think in the East they are closer to the top teams but I still think East top 4 is Cleveland, Washington, Chicago, and possibly Toronto as the end of the year.

before EG went down this team was rolling and looked really good. once again lack of depth and injuries are going to kill us

Ok? Have you watched games this year? It's pretty obvious if you watched the games. He got off to a slow start offensively which probably brought that stat down quite a bit. But it's obvious he's a good player.

it doesn't seem to me he has watched many from his comments. in the op it seems like he doesn't know EG went down and he thinks jimmer gets a lot of minutes. there were people asking why jimmer wasn't getting any minutes before he started getting some out of necessity because of the EG injury. Also didn't know we didn't have a 1st round pick. It sounds like he watched the pels/warriors on tnt and formed all his opinions there

team hasn't won more than 2 in a row... not sure I would call that rolling... best stretch was 5-3 to start the season?

any minutes Jimmer gets is counter productive imo

They do have a 1st round pick if it falls in a certain criteria

Can you recall what games you've seen? You've seen 8 but the team is 8-9 and outside of the Portland loss they haven't looked good while losing, so if most of your 8 games were losses you don't have a full picture of what the team is capable of. If you only saw the 8 wins for example you might wonder how they could be losing so much.

top 3 or above 20 I think is the criteria. so only way we keep it if we win the lottery which is very unlikely because we will probably finish just out of the playoffs

the 3 we lost to were the grizzles, cavs and mavs. the only game we didn't look great in was the grizz. we had late collapses against the cavs and mavs after dominating almost the whole game. for a team that didn't have many games together as a full unit they looked really good and primed for something.

Making the playoffs dosent guarantee your pick either. You have to have one of the 10 best records in the NBA. Making the playoffs in the West will be tough. Do you have more wins than 6 other playoff teams? We are almost certainly losing that pick.

Which is why they should probably just tank it, go all 76'ers and secure a top 3 pick. They have a very good PG playing in China right now they could grab that would make Rivers/Holiday pointless since he is younger and better.
