I've gone back and re-watched the first 8 episodes of this season and came away appreciating Gimple's influence and direction of the show.

Were some of the episode a little drawn out? Maybe a little, but there wasn't the idiotic BS of Rick having visions and playing "Farmer John". It didn't have the useless effort of making Andrea out to be a badass and tribal mediator. It didn't have much of any of the major problems the first 4 seasons had.

The biggest problem I see is that Season 5 started with just a power blast that everything that followed was anticlimactic. Most reasonable fans knew they could never keep that pace going...and, sure enough, they didn't. But that's not to say Season 5, up to this point, hasn't been the best season thus far; which I believe it is.

Season 5 (episode 9) can't come soon enough for me.

The first half was awesome, until the end of the last episode.

rick's plan to exchange prisoners was mind boggling.

They have superior weaponry. Colt Pythons, super nice 1911s (that's a better piece than Maggie, nice job glen), long range fully automatic rifles (aks, m16s and ar15s), silencers for all their firearms. The cops are all carrying 9mm polymer pistols. So even if you're going to make an exchange, why not do it where you can successfully employ this long range advantage

Anyway, why even do an exchange...interrogate the hostages, give them a dose of sweet murder and plan your attack from there. Dawn is in a fortified structure so why would you even want her to know you're coming, who you have (or don't because you murdered them), but more importantly who you want.

move in, kill everyone, take beth and carole...end of story

damn rick, I get a chubby everytime you use that colt revolver...fricking sweeeeet

Rick's gun handling seems to have improved a bit. He doesn't hold his pistol with that retarded grip like he used to.

It was because the rest of the group are such massive pussys. Rick wanted to kill em all from the jump. But no, king pussy himself Tyreese is like no, we can't. Humanity blah blah blah. Ty got Beth killed, nobody else was to blame there. They fricking neutered his character. He was a bad arse on the level of Rick and Abe in the comics.

I don't mind Beth dying , but her endangering the group that came all that way to rescue her was very un-Beth of her. Sorta rubs me the wrong way

When using Noah as bait worked it should've shown them what they're dealing with

They forcibly kidnap, rape and kill

Should've cleaned out that whole place out

And yes Ty fricking blows and his sister is a fricking moron for turning her back to that cop

I've really liked this season, and it's not a complaint that I say this but

I still find myself questioning 90% of rick's decisions

Season 3&4 lost me

This one has me back

Wasn't his plan. It was one of the others. Rick only gave in when Daryl said he agreed with it.

Felt like a rehash of season 2, just better executed.

Beth = Sophia
Church = Farm
Ty = Herschel
Maggie/Darryl = Carol
Cop Girl = Shane

The issue for me was that they spent most of this season looking for Beth. Maybe most of the characters weren't focused on this the whole time, but you could tell early on that this was the pinnacle point the show was moving towards.

And killing Beth made the whole season worthless.

We learned two things this season: Eugene was not a scientist (no shite) and Beth dies.

Rick's already been through the "Would I rather be the bad guy?" storyline.

The preview for next half-season looked like more "I want to survive in the wild vs. I want to survive in a town" bullshite.

There's been 8 episodes so far in season 5. Beth didn't show up until the 4th. Episodes 6 and 7 were about how to get her back and the 8th was her death. She's been a part of the group since season 2. They weren't just going to have her get bitten in the woods.

Some sort of signifcant mover needs to happen. They need to start moving towards some sort of goal. DC and the cure was almost that, but now that's gone. Do they build a community? Do they find Noah's home? What's next?

I hate when people say this...it didn't make the season worthless.

Exactly. She's been part of the group since season 2. They weren't just going to let some random car take her away for a full season.

If you didn't see "search and rescue Beth" all over this season, you were blind.

Have a feeling Glenn isn't going to make it out of season 5.

I think that will effect Maggie tremendously, after she's lost so much we really haven't gotten to see her personal turmoil. I think she's held a lot of it in, stuffed it down.

I can see Glenn sacrificing himself to save his friends. He's been there since episode 1 (voice) and his characters impact has sorta cooled off.

Speculation, have no idea what will happen at the end of 5. But as far as gut punching writing, Glenn is the most expendable yet acceptable to say goodbye to that would hold weight with the audience. I see Rick, Daryl, Carl, and Maggie (because of Beth and Herschel) as safe.

Beth = Sophia

Don't agree with this. There was no character development of Sophia...zero. Also, there was never that "search party" approach concerning Beth. I will say that it became obvious that Beth was going to be the odd man out when they had her kidnapped and missing from most the season. The producers are removing characters in a "willy nilly" style, I'm guessing, in order to keep leverage over all of the actors.
Actor: "Hey, this show is the # 1 show and I want more camera time and money!" Producers: "I understand your position. We'll consider your request."
Producer to writers: "Time for _____________ to bite the dust!"

quote:

Church = Farm

I don't agree with this. The farm was a major part of the story-line...a perceived safe haven and the church wasn't.
Rick to Carl in the church: "You are not safe!

quote:

Ty = Herschel

I have no idea what the hell they're doing with Tyreese. He's not the reincarnation of Herschel. Herschel's position was based upon morals and ignorance as to the new world. Tyreese is running from his past.

quote:

Maggie/Darryl = Carol

Not sure what this means. Carol's story was one of redemption; I don't remeber that being the case with Maggie or Darryl.

quote:

Cop Girl = Shane

Dawn was more like the Governor than Shane.

My first half review:

Episode 1 - great. probably Top 2 in the series
Episode 2 - awesome. Quality, as Les would say.

Episodes 3 - 8 - awful
