Why did Tom Osborne retire at 60?

The game had not passed him by. Could have made it 5-6 more good years minimum.
Was he that anxious to get into politics?

good question. I didn't realize he was only 60.

Because the Big 12 placed a limit on partial qualifiers. Goodbye advantage.

So he didn't wind up a drooling idiot who doesn't know where he is half the time?

He got the '97 national title as a parting gift

That was nearly 20 years ago, baw. Testosterone therapy has come a long way since then.

Because that Federal Retirement was too good to pass up.

b/c he was a moron who went for 2 instead of kicking the PAT that would guarantee him the NC
stupidest decision in the history of sports

Meh, as a non-Nebraska fan, I've always thought it was a pretty baller move for him to say "nah, I don't want to split a title." Plus, the guy should've caught that pass.
If I was a Nebraska fan, I'd have been angry as heck.
ETA -- per Wikipedia, Nebraska was #1 in both polls going into the game and Miami was #4 and #5, so there's the possibility that the polls just would've given Nebraska the title outright because they were #1 going into the game. So yeah, stupid at the time, but at least he made up for it ten years later.

Giving that he wanted to be sporting and not just accept the tie, the mistake he made was not going for 2 the first time. That would have given him 2 chances to make the 2 point conversion and show he was sportsman and all he needed was a tie.

I just looked at his record by year. He never won fewer than 9 games a year. That's pretty sick.
