I was in a meeting today between me (IT) and some folks that we support on the business side and Imentioned that one of our Payroll interfaces had "bombed". One of the managers on the business team told me that I should use the word "failed", instead of "bombed".

No big deal, but really? Where does this end?

I'll have to remember that one.

She seemed kind of embarrassed to ask me, because I think she knew she was being a little ridiculous. I think she hangs out with a crowd that probably discusses this kind of shite.

Why did bomb become associated with fail?

Bombings are intentional acts of destruction and only fail if the device does not work which results in a non-bombing.

That's not political correctness, just failed sounds more business like rather than slang

This and he might have been suggesting that "bombed" was too harsh given the circumstances.

Clear and precise language is more professional than slang. In addition, there are individuals that may not know what bombed means in that context. Why risk it?

Yeah. Failure could just mean it didn't mean some minimum standard. I interpret bomb as it didn't even get close to that standard.

I am so thankful I don't work in an industry/sector that has such uptight people.

Hopefully people don't get failed at the Holiday party.

Might be severe HR repercussions.

"Bomb" is a time tested term used by IT folks to indicate that a computer program has ended abnormally. "The job bombed". It's nothing new.

Doesn't sound like a PC thing to me. Bombed is slang. Failed appears more professional.
