Let's Talk Common Core

There's a quiz going around that is igniting the Common Core fire again.
LINK
Here's my deal with Common Core. I don't mind the higher standards. They have gotten out of hand with this "teaching to the test" crap.
Here is a page from a 6th grade math book from 1924.
We've gotten a long way from this sort of rigor. Common Core is actually doing one thing right - its teaching kids how to think rather than what to think. Its frustrating to adults because most of them learned how to memorize a test.
Now, I hate Common Core with a passion because its lining pockets of lobbyists, text book publishers, etc. But I do not mind the rigor. In fact, I welcome it.
Also, if an adult can't score 80%+ on the linked test above, its not the curriculum or the material, its the adult.

Why do you hate people making money? Are you a commie? What do your 1980's textbooks say about communism?

I have no problem making money. I have a problem with people buying votes of lawmakers that write laws that say that more people have to buy something from the people who bought the votes.

But you said you agreed with Common Core? If its a good idea why did they need to buy people off?

I agree with more rigorous standards. I don't like Common Core. The vast majority of the anti-Common Core crowd is pissed off because they can't do the math. Teachers included.
There's nothing wrong with the material. There's something wrong with how we got it.

Common Core, a consistent set of standards that all should be measured against to evaluate the efficacy of their educational systems, is a good idea and the time is well past for the US top institute it. If there are problems with the institution of Common Core, fix the problems.
Partisan bickering will be the downfall of this country.

Teaching our children how to THINK should be a goal of every person.

My wife teaches 5th grade so I hear a lot about CC. In Georgia, by adopting Common Core standards, it only changed/added two items in the entire K-12 curriculum.
I agree that some of the things that are demo'd are ridiculous, but other things, such as teaching a kids different ways to solve a problem, or how to do mental math (1538+3199 is easier to do if you round it to 1540 and 3200 and approximate to 4740).

I've never had an issue with common core math. That quiz looks like what I was doing in the 1970's.

I oppose any education reform that fails to mandate Latin and Greek.

I took the test and missed one but to be honest, that was the way I was taught when I was a child. I attended a private school.

I hoped you wouldn't...being as you are older and capable of abstract thought. Little ones are not yet capable of abstract and only concrete. That is how their little brain is wired. The older kids and especially high school are not having the problems the little ones are and its detrimental to their learning. There are large problems with the ELA portions as well.
That is part of the issue with common core. The curriculum was made by a person who just decided he had a better way and everyone should learn like him. Never vetted. Never voted on via committee. No child psychologist were asked to review to see if its age developmentally appropriate. They just pushed it in and said pay us. What sucks is once you are in you have to keep buying modules for your school system. Its like crack...on e your hooked they have a steady source of income. Constant. And that's the idea. Its costs a fortune. There are no materials and everything has to be printed out by the system... one hell of a fleece job

Education system was a lot better when we considered education as a privilege. and not something you force feed! We had plenty of field workers as not to import foreign workers! The books were written to understand and with reason behind the words! People understood what the school bell meant unlike the supreme court! Freedom reigns!

Ahh... the days when stock prices were quoted in 1/8ths dollars. =)
I have a kid in first grade, so we are full into Common Core. I have been pleasantly surprised with the rigor. If this keeps up, no doubt our kids are going to be smarter. I'm also fine with the different methods being used, although, I've had to do homework myself to help my 1st grader to do some of her math homework - just because the terms they are using are new to me. But once I realize what it is, it makes complete sense.
As far as teaching to the test... that was around before Common Core was. I'm not a fan of standardized testing... but I also don't want to go back to the days where valedictorians from OPSB schools couldn't spell and needed remedial classes in college.

So you want the rigor but think the text book writers should not get to eat?

Amen.

I dislike Common Core. I can do the math. My kids can do the math.
I dislike it because it's mandated at a federal level. It WILL be politicized over time. There are two many people with an agenda in our nation's capitol that want to include their agenda in our Common Core standards.
I also dislike the scoring system that they have implemented with the Common Core. I have 3 high school freshmen who are A/B students. Two of them have an "F" and one of them has a "C" in their Lit & Comp 9 class. We called teacher conference and the teacher said they were all doing fine and that the score was just the result of the new scoring system they are using with CC. I asked, "How the hell am I supposed to know if they are doing poorly, if they have an "F" when they are doing fine?".
