Low Annual Bonus
Posted on 12/3/14 at 9:17 am

We just received our annual bonuses for the year. I just graduated and started working for this small CPA firm in June. My salary is 45k. In my interview I was told that the annual bonus is usually around 5k. I knew I wouldn't get close to that working half a year and being new and inexperienced, but we just got our checks and mine was$100.
Do I have a right to be upset or is this normal considering my situation?

$100? Good thing you are not Charles.
ETA: Seriously, that would not make me that happy if I was promised up to $5,000. I mean why even waste the time and manpower to distribute $100.

$100 is a slap to the face. You would think they would give you half of $5,000-maybe they figure since you are training that they don't have to give you the full amount. Might want to talk to your boss about it.

A little context is needed.
Did the firm have a good year?
Were others hired in the general time frame and did they receive a larger bonus?
Have you performed up to or exceeded the company's expectations for a new hire?
Does the policy say if you are eligible for the bonus with out a full year employment?

See, I'd take a different tack. At an appropriate moment, thank your boss profusely for getting a bonus at all...saying you didn't expect one since you're still in the probationary period. Ask, very earnestly, what you need to do in the coming year to ensure you are bonus-eligible. Emphasize how much you appreciate the opportunity for feedback and the opportunity to earn next year's bonus.

Go to large firm. Working at a smaller firm only hurts your future career. Be sure it is a "known" firm. Most people don't know anything about accounting but if you work somewhere they have heard of you are great CPA.

And your question. I would be pissed especially if you had a lot of billable time.

Talk to someone. Does their fiscal year end in December? Some companies pay out bonuses in the summer.
Maybe they're throwing you a little Christmas money and they don't pay bonuses out till after busy season.

What bonus did your peers received in the firm?
If they received 5K and you got one Benjamin then there is a problem.

I'll get an attendance bonus for not missing a single hour last year of $1k. That's it.
If I am here every day but called in it would be $250.

Maybe your jobs finished way over budget? Not much of that blame could be put on you since you are new and probably only do simple testing work, but it could be a factor.
Or you may not be any good at what they've asked you to do, but that's none of my business.

Where i work you have to be with the company a full year before you get a bonus. Was like that at my last company as well. However, in both instances i received a "partial" bonus because the companies had a good year and my projects were profitable. But i heard of others in the same company getting nothing.

I hate expecting a bonus, but I think I'd still be upset with $100, especially if that was part of what they used in bargaining your salary.

Anual leave or paid vacation time.

This or say nothing if you've only been there 6 months.

Our firm pays out bonuses after the first of year in order to allow year end collections to come in. So it's usually paid out around Feb 15th (we are on a calendar year). I've been in other firms that are on a fiscal year ending May 30 so the bonus is paid in July.
I've never gotten a Christmas Bonus anywhere.
I would try to clarify what that amount is. Did they specifically tell you it was for your annual bonus?
Honestly, first year (really 6 months) I would be happy with anything. A bonus is just that in a CPA firm. It's not like other industries where the bonus makes up a major part of comp.

Please tell me you are not serious. Or a first year accountant.
I've never worked at a firm larger than 500 people and I'm having a great career.
And do you really care if your friends "know" of the firm you work for? Most of them probably have their eyes glaze over when you tell them what you do, no matter where you work.
