Judge basically calls Goodell a liar in the Ray Rice ruling
Posted on 12/2/14 at 11:49 pm
Posted on 12/2/14 at 11:49 pm
"In this arbitration, the NFL argues that Commissioner Goodell was misled when he disciplined Rice the first time. Because, after careful consideration of all of the evidence, I am not persuaded that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview, I find that the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and must be vacated," Jones' decision stated.
"I find that the NFLPA carried its burden of showing that Rice did not mislead the Commissioner at the June 16th meeting, and therefore, that the imposition of a second suspension based on the same incident and the same known facts about the incident, was arbitrary," Jones also wrote.
"The Commissioner needed to be fair and consistent in his imposition of discipline.
"Moreover, any failure on the part of the League to understand the level of violence was not due to Rice's description of the event but to the inadequacy of words to convey the seriousness of domestic violence. That the League did not realize the severity of the conduct without a visual record also speaks to their admitted failure in the past to sanction this type of conduct more severely."
The sole issue in this matter is whether what Rice told the Commissioner and other
League representatives about the assault at their June 16, 2014 meeting was “a starkly different
sequence of events” than what was captured on the “inside-the-elevator” video. It was not. In so
holding, I find that the NFLPA has carried its burden of demonstrating that Rice did not mislead
the Commissioner at the June 16 meeting and, therefore, that the imposition of a second
suspension based upon the same incident, and the same known facts about that incident, was
arbitrary.
Rice testified that he told the Commissioner the following: after an argument at the
restaurant, as Rice approached the elevator bank, Mrs. Rice followed him and was yelling at him.
Tr. 468:2-5. She was cursing and trying to snatch his phone, and he said something vulgar to
her. Tr. 468:5-7. He then gestured at her, and she slapped him. Tr. 468:9-10. He started10
walking to the elevator, and she went ahead of him. In the elevator, he made another gesture at
her and again said something vulgar, and she hit him. Tr. 468:11-16. As Rice testified at the
arbitration hearing, he then told the Commissioner, “I hit her, [when] she was coming back
towards me. . . . and I hit her, and she went down and she hit her head, and then by the time the
elevator got up, the elevator opened, a security guard was right there and he said, after I was
dragging her out, ‘you had assaulted her, get away from her.’” Tr. 468:16-25. At the arbitration
hearing, Rice demonstrated with his left arm how he hit Mrs. Rice that night, swinging it in an
arc across his body with his hand open. Tr. 470:9-21. More significantly, he testified that he had
given the same demonstration at the June 16 meeting when he told the Commissioner about the
events, making it clear that his arm “came across” his body and hit her. Tr. 468:17-18; 470:9-21.
Birch did not pose any questions to follow up on Rice’s description of the assault. Tr. 303:16-
304:15; 341:7-10; 347:2-10; 513:18-25; see also Tr. 150:6-9.

Goodell a liar

Rice is still a piece of shite for what he did, but the league and Goodell are even bigger pieces of shite for at first not really caring and then trying to cover their arse in the public eye when the video got out.
They didn't increase the suspension because of what Rice did and how horrible it was. They did it for PR.
Goodell could give a frick less about fairness. As long as the PR is positive for the league, he'll do it.
Bounty Gate was pure PR trash. We were thrown under the bus for what every other team was also doing(which is 90% tough talk). Now Rice was thrown under the bus(which he deserved to be in the first place for his actions) for PR and not what he actually did.

It's sad how much power a few have in football.
Goodell is a lying jacka$$ and needs to be fired. Also...the NFL is a business not a non-profit organization. It's time for them to play on a level field.
In college...the NCAA & SEC HQ need their legs cut from under them. Too much power and too many double standards.

I don't understand how the Ravens terminating Ray Rice's contract is legal? The Players Association needs to go to war to help him recoup that money IMO.

I was under the impression that it's similar to Aaron Hernandez. He still got paid his guarantee when the Pats cut him. I'm sure Ray still got his guarantee as well.

I think Goodell has proven to be on the up and up and will be vindicated before long. His leadership has grown the NFL exponentially, including the NFL Network, which does national sports coverage.

Goodell is probably the worst commissioner of any major American sport in the past 50 years.
I don't care that the NFL has "grown under his watch", that was inevitable with fantasy football, women getting into the NFL, etc.

Stop trolling or you won't last very long

I'm not trolling friend. The NFL Network is a fine national sports outlet, which anyone would be honored to appear on, perhaps to give a local slant.

It could be terminated because he admitted to doing an illegal activity, regardless of any other factors.
Now was the timing right? No. The Ravens were covering their arse for PR reasons as much as Goodell and the league. They don't give a frick that he actually did it.

I fricking hate that argument about how you can't fire Goodell because the owners love his growth in revenue.
That's like saying Al Gore should be our President because he contributed to the growth of the internet. For frick's sake people, have some perspective.

It's ok though because they made up for it with commercials telling us no more and having players cry on camera. All is forgiven.

Well, you sound like a genius so I don't want to argue, but it's a pretty asinine statement to say that Goodell has been worse for the business than better.
Posted on 12/3/14 at 11:15 pm to AmosMosesAndTwins
Well then I am sure it ok for Roger to lie cheat and steal. Why hell he should be allowed to beat and Rape Ray Rice's wife. As long as NFl is profitable and NFL channel doesn't suck. WTF. and you sire have just illustrated my point better than anything I could ever do. Thank you man
Seriously, thank you.
