I rarely post here, if ever. But I have to share what I found recently with the world.

It's always been tricky to learn songs for bass despite the fact that I've played for about 10 years. Learn them by ear on guitar or learn them by ear through a PA with a system blasting. It just got a whole lot easier...

Vox amPlug

Check out the Vox amPlug. There are different models to emulate different sounds and overdrives for guitars as well. But the Bass one is absolutely awesome. Plug in your computer or music device in the Aux port and run headphones to the other port. You are now playing on the exact same channel to make sure you get the notes exactly right.

For $40 you can't beat it!

I want this, but I have to ask: are you on the payroll?

Edit: Link failure.

I know it seems like it. But I've never been able to practice at home before without pissing off my roommates or neighbors. I love this little thing.

These things have been around for ages, right?

Another form factor with far more flexibility is the Line 6 Pod Studio UX2 I bought back in 2008. It's a guitar/bass/microphone interface and USB sound card for PC/Mac that models dozens of different amps, effects, etc through the POD Farm software. It's marketed for PC-based recording, but it's the equivalent of their other non-HD POD products in terms of the modeling it can do. If you just want to plug in and listen through headphones, it's just fine for that. I have the line level output going to a Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system which serves as my half-arse amp.

They still make it:

Yeah they've been around a while... I got a second or 3rd hand one a few years back. Always had a little trouble with getting it to play 100% right but it lived a rough life. One cool feature is you can use an aux cord to play thru your car or other portable speakers. Pretty cool on vacations or when you don't feel like packing an amp. I used it to play for the family a few times last summer.

That's a pretty cool idea. Not bad... Not bad at all!
