Jerald Hawkins: Open Letter

Jerald, 2015 is your year as an LSU tiger. The 2015 LSU football team will be special. You could anchor the line at LT and become a legendary Louisiana icon like Collins, Faneca, and Mawae.
One more season at LT and you can immensely increase your draft stock and gain a $10 million signing bonus.
Come back for your teammates, your home state, and most of all come back for your family's future financial well being.

how do you know he is going to improve his draft status? NFL scouts aren't dummies and know what he has to offer the NFL. He could make big money right now. He may come back and blow out his knee and ruin his draft status. We may go 6-6 next year if this offense doesn't get an overhaul. LOt of stuff can happen before the 2015 draft. Could just take the sure money that he can get right now.

lol. You are too simple minded. He goes now, he's probably 3rd or 4th round. He comes back and shows he can play at LT, and he could push himself into first round. LSU also has the option of paying for his insurance. No way I would just go and get what I could get unless I knew I'd done all I could do.
For instance Simon and Freak. I know they are backups or at least on practice squad, but both had the option of coming back to greatly improve. Instead they get chump change and hopeful that they stay around long enough to pull in the 2nd contract. I'm not saying they do get higher just by coming back, but the reward far outweighed the risk.
Jalen Collins and La'el Collins will show you what one more year of training and improving on the field will get you upfront and guaranteed.

considering his family life back home, if he's got a shot at 4th round or higher, he's gone....
"improving draft stock" don't put food on the table NOW....

Some players are just not ready. Gerald Hawkins falls into that category. He has the measurable but not the film...yet.
If he comes out, he will be a third day pick, make the league minimum and fight for a roster spot. If he gets injured in the fall of 2015 in the NFL, he may be done.
If he comes back, a year older, more mature, stronger, more honed in his craft, in a leadership position, he can play his way into a first or second day pick. That means guaranteed money, and a much more significant annual salary (something that ends in "million", not "thousand").
For Hawkins, this is a no brainer. He absolutely should come back. Only Danielle Hunter and Vadal Alexander should even think about it and, as noted in an earlier post the reasonable, patient, mature decision for both Hunter and Alexander is to come back.
I honestly believe that as passionate LSU fans speculating about raw players who aren't yet ready going early to the NFL, we help feed into the environment that results in poor decisions. La'El Collins is primed and ready and is about to become a rich man. Jerald Hawkins can work hard and try to do similar or he can delude himself into thinking that because he starts for LSU he should go pro. News flash, there are about 60 starting right tackles at Power Five conference schools and 60 starting left tackles. Probably 75% of them are draft eligible. Hawkins is, right now, maybe a top 20 tackle prospect for 2015. Come back, get stronger, mature, hone your skill and he can start the 2015 season as a top ten prospect and work his way into the top 5, which means round one or two.
This is not rocket science.

His family life back home is just fine.

I've talked to him abt it and he's very much worried abt his degree and his backup plan. So he'll be back

Good. some of these guys careers are over before they hit 26. A few hundred thousand isn't going to drastically change their lives.

Please come back, big guy!
