off-the-shelf PCs are poorly configured for gaming, but if you're just looking to play old games it won't matter.

any sites that allow me to build from parts, but they build it for me?

Just do it. It's easy and there are plenty of people here to help you.

And honestly, the absolute worst case scenario in the unlikely event you can't figure it out and the extremely unlikely event we aren't able to walk you through it, you might have to pay the local computer shop 100 bucks to put it together for you. And even then, you still got better value than pre-built.

Not quite, when you first build figuring out what plugs in where is the hardest part. Most things are labeled these days, but even building my 2nd this was still the hardest part.

That said, with some time and patience it's not too bad.

If you have any ability to assemble things, it's easy.

I had the same problem! Last time I built a comp was like 8 years ago... so even all the cable types were different. Wtf is a sata.

I would work an ssd in there. I will let ilikelsutoo handle the rest.

Ditch the network and sounds cards. Bump up the gpu to either an r9 290x or gtx 970 to get the most out of the monitor

Eta: and yes, get an ssd - 240gb would be enough to start with

The ssd works as another storage but is able to run things faster? I feel like I know it's purpose but not quite how it works

It takes the memory and instead of drawing it and needing longer load times, basically has the memory on standby allowing for instant loads?

And don't I need network and sound cards?

The network card you picked is for wireless. If you're not going to hardwire it, then you'll need something. But hardwire it.

The mobo has onboard sound. No sound card needed at all.

The ssd will boot everything in seconds.
