Why did we play 12 regular season games in 2003?

I thought seasons were 11 games long until 2005.

The 12 game seasons actually started in 02, I forget why they went back in 04 and 05.

The reason at the time:
quote:

No. 1, the schedule consists of 11 games. In those years when the calendar has 14 Saturdays during the traditional football season, a school can play 12 games: 2002, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2019.
