Installing a gate opener on a wrought iron fence

Is there a particular drill bit that I need in order to drill a hole into a wrought iron fence? I'm obviously not too skilled at this, but its a project I'm going to give it a go at. Any other tips or things I should be aware of before I break out the drill?

First get a center punch, punch a dot where you need the center of the hole. Once you have that esstablished drill a 1/8" hole for a pilot and work your way up to wjatever size hole you will need. Dont press to hard, let the drill bill cut. If the metal is not coming off on small curled sheets its not cutting. Use a little water in a squirt bottle to keep the bit cool if you wish.
